1921-D Morgan with Rim Issue

I have a 1921-D Morgan dollar with extra silver at the rim below the date. I don't think it's worth anything extra, just trying to figure out the cause.
Did the collar slip? When I examined the edge, the reeding looks fine. From the neck V to the 4th right star, there are a couple extra layers of silver on the rim.
Also, in other areas on the obverse, the spaces between the denticles extend into the rim and look like dents.
The coin has a far date, doubled 192, tripled 1, and a double ear at lower inside. The only 21-D I found with a double ear is VAM-7, but the date is doubled differently and the reverse description doesn't match. Don't see any 21-D's listed with a far date.
Any ideas about the rim damage? How about the VAM designation?

I think I've seen something like this in my Margolis book. It's where excess metal on the rim gets folded over back onto the coin.

Thanks. Too bad all I ever have is questions!
I don't think the ear is doubled. The more coins I examine, it looks like that is normal on the 21-D's. The date is far and doubled. Not sure how the extended indentations happened on the denticles. I guess the extra or misplaced silver could push the collar over.
    Thanks again folks.

Nice coin Herb. Some of that looks like it got pushed into the denticles. Maybe this could be a new type of collection.
  • On nvest's coin I would describe it as rim crumbling. On bzman350's coin it has progressed a little further and would be described as a rim cud. In the case of the 21-D he outermost edge of the die which forms the rim is starting to chip away. On the 02-O a larger piece of the edge which include the rim area and part of the denticle design has broken away and the cud crossed the entire rim and the edge of the denticles.
