Greetings All! Newbie Question..

Greetings!

Long time lurker...first time poster..many more to come! image

I've been causally collecting raw coins for many years but I'd like to take it more seriously. I started with the modern commemoratives, the state quarters and the new nickels. I have never had anything graded.

I recently came across an 1877 Trade Dollar from my fathers estate that I might get graded. Since it is a Prime Number I can take advantage of the quarterly freebie here a PCGS. I have see other users post pics for opinions here and have seen very knowledgeable feedback given. I would like to do the same.

Attached is a pic of the item. Please let me know what you think. Is this worth sending in for the freebie? I appreciate your feedback.

Regards,

-Tom

    Welcome, Tom.

I would not send the coin in for grading. I grade the coin Fine. It makes it worth about $100. Registered mail each way for grading will be at least $12. Not worth the effort. The coin will not be any more valuable or salable inside the holder. These are my opinions--I am an average collector. Others who collect Trades will hopefully give their opinion.

    Good Luck!

  • First of all: Welcome!
The coin you have is a nice coin. It has been cleaned in the past, but is still a popular coin. It is worth in the $125 to $160 range. If I had the coin I would sell it raw or keep it. Having it certified is not going to increase your bottom line.

    Have a Great Day!

    Welcome to the fray!
  • Welcome to the Forum. As the coin has sentimental value, I'd leave it raw. And the rim bump and light cleaning would probably keep it out of a PCGS holder--- and it's a nice collector coin to put in an album or "type" collection anyway.

    Welcome Mac1drvr!

I too lurk more often than I post. Your post, and many from the past from others are the reason why. Many of my questions get answered before I even ask.

I have a seated Lib quarter, that's an XF (I think), I was considering submitting for the CC Special. The dark areas around some of the design, especially the stars, look just like yours. I suspected cleaning in it's past and thought I'd get the opinion of the group. I feared the body bag. After seeing this post, I think it's best that I save my postage fees and submit something else.

So many posts help others but never know it.

BTW, If you want that coin graded and slabbed for your own collection (regardless of value) there's always ANACS. I usually send my below MS stuff there to avoid wasting money on a body bag. I'd rather have a net grade in those cases.

i grade it f-12, & worth about 60 bucks. totally not worth the cost of a chunk'o'plastic

  • I would send it to ANACS, even if it was net-graded just to keep it protected from further damage. That would be more preferable then in a cardboard holder and staples. That would be the most cost efficient way to go.
