What will she grade (Morgan)

ddbirdddbird Posts: 3,168 ✭✭✭
I picked this 87 morgan up from the local shop just becuase it was VERY clean and cheap. My eye went right to it in the store...What do you think she will grade? All the disturbance on the cheek are breaks in frosting, theres only a light scuff to the left. The reverse is very clean too. Will breaks in frosting hurt the grade and be counted as bag marks or not?

The Obverse would likely grade MS-64, because of those rather noticeable scuffs -- otherwise likely MS-65. Yes, the scuffs and the frost breaks impact final grade.

Since the weigh the obverse for Morgans at 60% of the total grade you are 38.4 grade poits tword the final grade. If you show us a reverse photo, then we can try to grade the entire coin. image

CoinFreak: That's not a bad strike for an 1887-P mint Morgan, and slight cameo devices surrounded by nice satiny fields. image

DDB: Updated after viewing reverse photo: Excellent reverse photo -- much better white balance than obverse photo. Based on seeing BOTH side sof the coin I'd say lock MS-64 (Shot 65).

Also, nice die crack from 9:00 to 1:00 on reverse!!

  • Is there something going on above the eye? Photos can be so deceiving sometimes. Looks like a fairly mark-free coin otherwise!

Nope...no marks anywhere but to the left, and A slight one under her chin. The photographs pronounce everything too...In hand, the cheek looks flawless.

    looks like a solid 64
  • Solid 64 with a push towards 65 - depends on the hair wear over the ear and that wingtip on the reverse.

    Solid 64.
  • The large mark in the left obv. field limits it to a 64 IMO, although it's very attractive.

  • I agree 64, and a very nice one at that.

MS 64. Large obv mark, soft hair above ear (with a hit on it), and does the lower portion of the cheek look a little grainy?

  • I'd say solid 64, b/c of the scuffs it will just miss a 65. Very nice coin!

    64. If it weren't for the scrape on the obverse field, I'd guess 65.

I'd call it a nice 64; too bad about that big mark to the left of the portrait. Cool die cracks!

What's up with the 'stubble' on the cheek/jawline? I used to have a very clean '87 just like that, with exactly that sort of stubbly pocking. Any thoughts on what causes that?

In hand there is nothing there..visible without magnification at least. Might just be this certain die cuase a break in frosting here. This coin would be an Easy 65+ without the mark to the left. Still a nice coin for the $20 I payed. I like it alot
  • That coin says MS-65 to me.
