Contest - Win the mystery proof set DING-DING-DING - we have a winner

I got this strange looking proof set that seems to have been holding up the leaky water heater for many years in somebody's basement. No box, just the set.

It will be given away to the first person who can answer both questions correctly.

Question #1
What is the most amount of change you can have and still not be able to make change for a dollar?

Question #2
You have 10 stacks of 10 coins each and one of them is counterfeit. A genuine coin weighs 10 grams and a counterfiet weighs 11 grams. With only one weighing how can you tell which stack is counterfeit?

Remember to form an orderly line and NO SHOVING!

    jim

  • answer to #1) 1.19

    1 quarter 9 dimes and 4 pennies

    Answer #2) The tallest stack
  • #1 1.19 1 quarter 9 dimes 4 pennies

#2 If you take one coin from the first stack, two coins from the second
stack, and so on, then if the net result is one ounce too light you'll
know the first stack is counterfeit, if it's two ounces too light
you'll know it's the second stack, and so on.

answer 2- after 1 weighing you get lucky and just happen to come across the counterfit pile on your first try.

    1) Four cents; four dimes and three quarters. ($1.19).
    2) Make ten stacks of coins starting out with one coin in the first stack, two in the second and so forth. Whatever grams your off is the stack that has the counterfeit (seven grams? It's the seventh stack).

Spiffy beat out braddick by 2 minutes (even thought spiffy cited ounces instead of grams he was correct on the concept).
I guess that's why they call him Spiffy!

    #1) - 3 Quarters, 4 dimes and 4 cents

#2) Take one coin from stack 1, one from stack 2, etc.
Since the counterfiet weights 1 gram more, the number of grams over indicates the stack of counterfiets.

    Congratulations Spiffy.

CSCoin- I used to own your icon. It was a nice coin. 1558, in an ANACS EF40 slab. Its previous owner created that icon from it.

  • Here's what threw you off.

You have 10 stacks of 10 coins each and one of them is counterfeit.

Here's a clearer way of saying it:

You have 10 stacks of 10 coins each and one of the stacks is counterfeit.
  • Thank you to relayer for the fun little contest.

Looks like i just barely edged out braddick
Its no wonder i switched grams with ounces, I was typing so fast, and i jsut had some surgery on my right hand so i was typing with just my left hand. I didnt know i could type so fast one handed LOL

Thanks again and keep your eyes open for a giveaway from me in a few weeks. I've won a lot off of the boards lately so I am looking to throw something up for all of you in the near future

    << <i>Question #1
What is the most amount of change you can have and still not be able to make change for a dollar? >>

Since SBAs and SACs are coins (change), I can have an infinite amount of these and still not be able to make change for a dollar.

    << <i>Question #2

Keep adding a stack on the scale until the scale reads a number that is not evenly divisible by 100, then the last stack placed on the scale has the conterfeit. Technically, this is only one weighing.
