Bank Rolls

Hey guys,

I am just curious if anybody else gets rolls of circ coins from the bank and looks through them on a regular basis??

I do it on a fairly regular basis, maybe two or three times a month.
I've gotten to know a few of the bank tellers rather well and they will have my order ready and waiting for me. They also keep an eye out or anything interesting and save it for me. I got a silver certificate and a few 90% kennedys on my last trip. image

My usual order is:
20 rolls of Pennies
10 Rolls of Nickels
10 rolls of Dimes
5 rolls of quarters
5 rolls of halfs (If they are in stock)

Anyways I was just wondering if anyone else does this on a regular basis

Jeff

I enjoy looking at the quarters and find keepers frequently. There's at least the
two states issues to add to the collection every ten weeks.

I used to do that for JFK halves as you are able to find some silver almost every time. I would also ask for Ike Dollars if they ever came their way, but I haven't searched through rolls in a while. Was always fun finding some goodies.
  • yes, when I get really hard up for entertainment, and have no money to buy coins.
  • normally i do:

    2 boxes of pennies $50
or 2 boxes of nickels $200( not really worth it)
or box of halves $500. depending on my money flow. mostly ill always weekly do 2 boxes of pennies

  • I'm obviously in the minor leagues:

I try to do $10 (5 rolls) of nickels every week and whenever I've spent all the halves I have I get $40 in halves. Every once in a while I get a roll of sacs and often ask (unsuccessfully) for Ikes.

I like the nickels because I average 1% (2 out of the 200) are pre-1960 keepers for me.
Rarely do I get any silver in the halves but I don't mind too much because quite a few are uncirculated 1996-D, 1999-D or 2000-D's that I keep the nicer ones. I'm trying not to repeat the mistake I made in 1992. I kept spending all of the unc 1991-D halves while looking for silver. I kept one roll of 1991-D halves and it's value has jumped to around $100, the other $400 dollars worth of unc 91-Ds are now nicely circulated.
Some call it an accumulation not a collection
  • I just have the vault teller do it for me. Takes some of the fun out of it but it is easier.

  • i see that some of you make reference to Ike rolls.
I was unaware you could even get these
How often are you actually able to get them???

In the early 1980's you could get Ike rolls almost anywhere. Well a day before Christmas eve 2004, I was at the bank and I always ask the teller if they have any Kennedys. As usual the answer was no. I was finishing my business and the teller says, there was a lady who brought in some of those big dollar coins a few minutes ago. I said oh really, how many do you have? $273.00 worth, the teller says. Now my mind is doing flip flops thinking, could this be Morgan $, nah they were Ikes. Anyway, I got $173.00 and when going through them, I was surprised how good of shape they were in. No BU's, just nice AU coins. Out of the lot I picked about 8 Ikes that I decided to keep. The next business day after Christmas I scrambled back to that bank to get the rest of them. Someone else had already got them. image I think the teller got them. I'm always going through Lincoln cents. It's an obsession with me. image
