Is the 1878 7/8 tail feather variety also called the reverse of 1878 or reverse of 1879?
Thanks for any help with this question.image

CoinVac41: The 1878 7/8TF is one of the varieties which exist only on the "Reverse of 1878" also known as the second reverse, because the first reverse is the original 8TF variety.

It does not occur on the "Reverse of 1879". Hope this helps to clarify.

The reverse of 79 is the reverse in which the top arrow feather is slanted, also known as the C reverse. The 7/8 tailfeather Morgan is a transition coin between the 1878 8 tailfeather coins (A reverse) that came first and the subsequent 1878 7 tailfeather coins with the parallel top arrow feather (B reverse) that came second. Yes, the 1878 7/8 tailfeather coin is a reverse of 1878 coin.

  • Thanks folks for the quick answer to my question. This forum has the most informed and responsive
people. I am going to a local coin auction soon and I was not familiar with this coin. There are several
certified examples of this coin available and now I can better estimate the value. Thanks again.imageimage
