What Is Going On To Cause The Difference in These Morgan Dollars?

I noticed the difference in these two Morgan Dollars of the same date and wondered if any of the Morgan experts could tell me what caused the differences in the two coins? I thought maybe it is a die crack.

I don't see anything in the first picture. In the second pipcture, I see a line coming off the 'V' of the neck. This could be a small gouge/scratch in the die or maybe where they polished it. It's hard to say without actually seeing the coin. I don't think it's a die crack though.
