Which one is the PCGS PR70DCAM???? --- ANSWER POSTED!!!

And the 70 is ------------- the Roosevelt!!!! The Roosie received the least votes and was the one PCGS determined to be a 70. Now I don't necessarily disagree with their grade -- it does look much much nicer than all of the 69s of the same year and mintmark I have seen, but so does the Jeff and the Washington. I don't know if 70 is really a grade you can "see" as much as its a grade you "get."

If you're looking for Registry points -- 70s are the way to go. If you are looking for value -- top end 69s are it -- IMHO.#

I really wish Wondercoin would have responded to this thread since he specializes in 70s. I would have love to read his comments.

I've read other threads questioning whether there is a noticable difference between PCGS PR69s and PR70s. Is there? You tell me!

Which one is graded PCGS PR70 DCAM??? -- 2 are 69s 1 is a 70! No prizes since we are doing this via a poll, but at least I think it'll be educational.

The blue dot is on the slab and the smudge over the Eagle's breast is on the slab!

Let's see if there's a majority getting it correct.

I haven't looked at pops (which may tell the tale). I chose the 1979 Jefferson.
I went back and forth between the jefferson and the washington. imho, it could go either way.

    Nice pics btw

  • I chose the Washington because the frosted relief is thorough without any 'mirrored' sections, while the back fields are fully smooth and mirrored. In the nickel and dime, you can see areas where the frost isn't complete and some of the mirror has appeared on the relief. Therefore, I think the Washington fits the Deep Cameo designation.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

None of them look like 70's to me (but then I don't really believe in the idea of a 70 really existing)- but I'll say the roosevelt got the 70 grade......

It's hard to tell since each has some specs of dust, but I went with the quarter.

Dimes are easier because they are smaller, but I'll stick with the quarter

  • I'll say it again: Give me ten PR70DCAMS and ten PR69DCAMS in the same series/date/mm, put tape over the grade on the slab, and I defy anyone to correctly classify more than half of them. Any differences between the 69's and the 70's are not noticable, on average. Registry set madness!! (I've got more 70's than you do... NAH NAH NA NAH NAH....)

I went went with the quarter too.....Based solely on "look", and not on any real knowlege on my part. image

I was struck by the difference in the look between 79 and 94 coins. The frost was much more grainy in 79, which may have skewed the voting. (Assuming we're wrong.) image

  • Since I and the plurality seem to go with the Washington, and if all grading is done to a standard of "market acceptability"

then the Washington has to be 70 or the graders are wrong by their own definition of grading.image

  • I say the quarter.

The quarter has a mark to the left of date

and a mark to right of eagles head. It does have

    a beautiful appearence though.

I'm thinking the Jeffy since the Quarter appears a little weak on the LIBERTY and the QUARTER DOLLAR. The Roosy has some pretty weak bands and looks 'grainy'.

But then, What the heck do I know! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • The Quater. Not experienced with that high of grades though, so they all look the same to me!

image I'll say the Jeff. Nice pic's. Lee
  • Dime, looks like a spot on Jeff, but might be quarter.

Definitely not the nickel -- either dime or quarter -- and I'm going with the Dime. Reason? The quarter is unevenly struck -- some areas exhibit higher relief and deeper strikes than others. They dime, though is much smaller (e.g. less frosting) but is struck the most evenly/consistently throughout.

All of us know (or should know) that you can't grade a coin from a picture let alone try to figure out the difference between a 69 and a 70. Over the years there have been several PCGS 70 coins listed for sale on sites like Teletrade, Heritage, etc. that have terrible hazing spots as they turned in the holder.

As one who picked the Roosie image I congratulate my fellow graders who picked the Roosie as well. You're right, though, grading from pictures is tough.

Also, I only really collect Merc's, Peace, Walkers, Indian Heads...and yes...high-end proofs. After a while, at these grade levels anyway, it's more ranking than grading...after you see enough PCGS graded coins at certain grade levels you develop a sense for how they'll grade them.

All nice coins, though, in any event image
