Washington Quarter Help...is this a Breen 4378???

I was looking at a few of my certified Washinton quarters today and noticed something strange about the mint mark on my 1956-D. When I went searching for varieties I found that there is a "D" over Horizontal "D" variety (Breen 4378). I can't really tell whats going on, but certainly their is another mint mark of sorts underneath and protruding out to the east of the primary mint mark.


Does anyone have any idea what Variety I may have stumbled onto and do you think it could be a "D" over Horizontal "D" ???

Don't have my books here, do you have a 3rd edition of Cherrypicker's around? Might be a mention there, or Wexler's rpm book.

Nope.....never tried to attribute a Washington before but I read about the variety and thought that might be what I found......I might be able to look up a picture in Heritage's archives???

I think you have something there, and if my memory is right, like you suggest there is a quarter with something like a C on the mintmark pointing east, pretty sure there is a picture in the last Cherrypicker's.

I just checked out Heritage and I found 2 different ANACS MS64 Breen #4378's.....although it's tough to get close enough to make at all the details from what I can see I would say I hit the nail on the head.

Don't know if it adds value, but I think it look pretty cool regardless!
