    Here's where I look each time I get confused regarding type 1 and type 2 mintmarks on 1979s or 1981s proof issues:

    There is no "filled" S for 1981.

    This is probably the most frequently asked question from the unexpereinced collectors/dealers in my area. Many truly cannont tell if they have a tyI or Ty II. Its mainly becuase people confuse it with the 79 Ty I and II, which are different.
    In fact today, the local flea market vendor asked me to look at a couple for him to see if they were Ty II's. (none were)
