Best price people are finding for *unopened* rolls of 2005 SAEs?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,377 ✭✭✭✭✭
For those that collect them, what is the best price, incl shipping, you can find?
Looking at a few for sale (I want 2 rolls) and have seen prices from ~$190-$225.
I've seen the green boxes for $4000-5000.

With silver @ ~$6.50/oz, I think that is still a bit high ($190 per 20).

Should I just wait until I go to FUN to get a couple of rolls? But then, I am worried that some dumb dealer would have let everyone handle them and put them back in the roll (I've seen this at shows) image

So, what are people seeing for best prices and would you get ebay/online dealer/or at FUN if you were going?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • They are always at a premium early in January. If you want to be sure to be the first one to look through the rolls then you are going to have to pay the premium. (Everyone wants to be the first to have them and wants to be the first ones to go through the rolls. Higher demand means higher price.) If you want them cheaper then you wait until later and run the risk they have been pawed over.
  • The price of the Silver Eagles is not set yet by the mint and it is the London spot on December 28 plus a percentage and they are available only to mint master distributors at that price. Then the mint master ships them all over the country and he has to make a profit and shipping those eagles is not cheap as a roll is over a pound.
  • Bochiman, you can get a mint sealed box of 500 for $4,100 from Tulving (free shipping and insurance), so it's around $8 and a quarter per SAE. You'd be hard pressed to find a better price -- and as I've said many times here, the dealer spread kills the small collectors (no slam on Tulving, they are a great outfit, and many other dealers charge a lot more).

If you try to buy individual rolls, expect to pay more.

But then, I am worried that some dumb dealer would have let everyone handle them and put them back in the roll (I've seen this at shows)

Why does it matter if other people handle bullion silver? It's bullion. If you want MS69 specimens, you should buy them slabbed -- let the bulk submitters pay the grading fees, as they get reduced rates.

I've never understood why collectors care if these common coins are fingerprinted to hell, banged up, scratched, dropped, whatever -- the truth is their only value is the silver content. They have no numismatic value.

    Sequitor,

Thanks for the first part of your post....I have thought of buying by the box, but I don't want to tie $4000+ up and I don't want to become a "dealer" really. I only sell a few things at a time as dupes, etc, but if I went that route, I would have to sell 23 rolls of 20 each. Sure, I could probably make $500 or a little more after fees, but not worth my time right now.

For the 2nd part....well, I actually WILL buy a PCGS MS69 when they are available (I have a registry set for my son going and I will keep it going for him). For your point about fingerprints, etc, on bullion, well, that's kind of like not caring if your wife/girlfriend was "well-known" before you or not, isn't it? She can still perform all the functions no matter how much she has been

<< <i>fingerprinted to hell, banged up, scratched, dropped, whatever >>

    , right?

Sorry, but I like them pristine as I can. I have a dansco for him as well as myself, and I try to have nice looking, MS67+ w/ NO fingerprints, etc, in those albums for show.
I also like to give out some as gifts to friends and for babies of friends born in the current year (did that for 3 in 2004).
Would you give a small little gift like that all banged up or fingerprinted? I don't think you would. I think you have more class than that.

So, can we get off the "hate of bullion collecting" now?

    Thanks image

You know what? When gold was at $390-400 an ounce I posted a request seeking forum members to participate in a group purchase of between 20 to 40 $50 one-ounce gold eagles graded PCGS MS69, and I would have outlayed for more than my proportional share. We would have gotten a great price on the GAEs and, given what gold has done the last few months, we'd be sitting on a very tidy sum (read: profits).

But I didn't get a single response. Not one. What a wasted opportunity. So I'd encourage you to make a request for a group purchase of the SAEs because it makes perfect, rational economic sense. But if my experience is any indication, people tend to be pennywise and pound foolish.

that's kind of like not caring if your wife/girlfriend was "well-known" before you or not, isn't it?

This stretch is worthy of a Nike commercial.

    No problem.

btw....I never saw your post about the gold....yes, the speculation would have paid off this time. The saying is true "takes money to make money".

As for buying a green box.....with 25 rolls total, me only buying 2, not caring to "make a profit" or speculate, it would only be worth it with another 23 confirmed purchases @ roughly $175 each (that should be able to handle each roll + shipping within the US).

That's ~$20 cheaper than the lowest price so far, and a guaranteed "unopened" status....but without the other 23 rolls being purchased, that is a good chunck of outlay right now.

I could do a roll @ $175. That leaves about 19 more people.

Thanks, keep me in mind if this comes about.

Well, I think you should keep this one going. With a few more people you may just get there.

    BigE2,

Check out the thread I started on the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum. You need to turn on your PM.

    Randy
  • yes $12 a little steep for shipping on that dutch auction - especially with the new flat rate boxes out now, and that probably doesn't include insurance.

  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,377 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Pam,

    Silverstate is like that.
Read all the wording to the auction.

I bought from them once, had no problems, but didn't quite read ALL the fine print. Got a "good deal" on the singles but the shipping wiped that out.
I won't bid on them out of principal (and keeping my wallet safe) anymore....UNLESS it were an absolute DEAL.

I TOtally agree. I won't bid on any auctions that have inflated shipping charges like that, unless I am dumb enough not to read the shipping before I bid. When they say .30 per additional oz. it "sounds" cheap until you actually add it up. Inflated shipping is the rage on eBay these dayze. You do have to calculate it into your 'cost'.
