Mercury Dime double die question

This is a 1942-S Winged Liberty Head (Mercury Dime). That's about all I know about dimes.
The 2 in the date and the B in LIBERTY are doubled on the right. Didn't look like machine/strike doubling.
I checked the Coneca website but didn't see anything listed for 42-S.
Any ideas? Opinions? What should I do with it?

The coin you show is not listed in Treasure Hunting Mercury Dimes; Wexler & Flynn. Maybe you found a new one!

Hard to tell from the photos, are you sure it isn't machine doubled?
  • If you are sure it is a doubled die, send it to James Wiles at CONECA for attribution. He will ID it if listed, and possibly assign a new listing designation to your credit if it is new. $4 for CONECA members, plus s&h of $8 I think, maybe a little other charge. His email is jwiles@flash.net.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure about machine or die doubling. I have several Washington quarters and Roosevelt dimes with machine doubling. This looks more like the doubling I have on some Morgan VAMs. I really don't have the experience or knowledge to be sure. I sent Mr. Wiles an email with a link to the photos. I'll check the Coneca site again for details about attribution.
    Thanks again.
  • Machine doubling.
The mercury dimes are the worst of all the U.S. coin series for strike doubling.
You could probably put together an entire set of just machine doubled mercs.

Looks like machine doubling to me as well. Certainly doesn't have any characteristics that would make me think it was hub doubling.

    Sorry Machine doubling
  • Thanks guys (and girls if applicable). I'll throw it in the bag with the other machine doubled coins. I kind of like that idea about building a whole set.
