1943-P Double Die Washington Quarter

Does this look like a 1943-P double die? There's a tiny picture in the US Coin Red Book. It has the date doubled on the right, like this one. Is anyone a Washington quarter expert?

  • The notches seem to indicate a true double die. Doesn't seem to have the flat, shelf-like look of machine doubling.

looks like a lesser doubling than the one listed in red book
There are lots of low value doubled dies
  • It's on eBay for $15. That one in the Red Book looks to be in much better shape.
    Thanks for the info.

Can you post a close up of the motto too? I want to see if it matches the one in Cherrypickers (FS# 25c-016.7). Thanx.

There is probably 25-30 different DDO's & DMR's for a 43 quarter. You can check them all out on the coneca website. That is likely a DDO.
  • I don't know anything about quarters and don't have the Cherrypickers guide. Is this what you want? I don't have a good camera and only use an old scanner, but I have the coin and will scan any part you want. I'd rather see it go to a quarter collector than sit in my hands (plus I can buy another Morgan dollar). I see some doubling at the right base of the N and top left of the W?

Thanks for the picture. There is doubling on the whole motto but it's just too worn to see all the details. The letters look pretty thick.

It does look a lot like the one in Cherrypickers guide, but at a lower grade. For quarters, I only have the "Top 100" Cherrypickers pocket guide. I'm still waiting on Volume 2 of the big tome - like so many others. Unless someone adds their knowledge, I wouldn't say for sure that it is the same. I haven't seen enough of them to know for sure. But I still think you are correct in it being a true doubled die.

Regardless, IMO it's a really great find. Good luck with the auction!

  • I'm glad a few people could check it out. Thanks. I just lowered the price on the listing and added a picture.

This is not 11-O-I-the one that's listed in the Red Book, and the only one of the 30+ doubled dies for the year that's worth a substantial premium in circulated grades. It appears to me to be 1-O-I, worth less than $10. I've seen more than a few of the lesser dies on ebay being touted as 11-O-I by unknowledable and/or dishonest sellers. If you have an 11-O-I, you'll know it, as it's substantially stronger in spread than the much more famous 1943-S 1-O-I and is VERY evident on the motto.

Since koynekwest suggests it's worth less than $10. I'll give you a few buck more and get the bidding started at opening price. I'd bet the price goes much higher before it's all over but at least it's a start for you. I guess that's all we should say about your sale here without moving the conversation for the B/S/T forum.

I'm like you. I keep my coin sale money in the hobby by gettting something different. Especially since, for me, most of my coins are hand-me-downs and gifts. Of couse I have put plenty of extra money in to the hobby too.
