Good day
I am a Morgan collector for the last 15 years. Not too avid, enjoy picking up coins here and there.
I purchased a bank roll off of Ebay last week. I understand the risks; the seller told me he had not opened the roll but that one end was soft. I got the role and it was as described. 1883-O. End coins are toned; each of the interior coins has edge toning.
I looked through the coins and believe I have some very high quality coins in this lot. At least 4 are MS 66 and three more should grade higher. I am NOT a very good grader so when I send these in, they will probably go AU 50 (LOL). My question to the experts: Can a person be lucky enough to get 67 or 68 coins out of this situation? I find it hard to believe in this day but I do know that out of about 260 dollars I have now, these 7 coins are far and away the best in my collection. Given that the best I had was a number of MS 65s amongst my certified coins.
I do not have a very high quality digital camera, here is a poor photo of one of the better coins. The color is white and again I apologize for the low quality image. Opinions on the coin are appreciated.
I look forward to participating in this club I have leared a lot as a reader over the last few months.
Thanks
Rick Davis

Welcome aboard!
It is highly unlikely to get even an MS65 out of "original" Morgan rolls these days, let alone anything higher.
But who knows? Perhaps the thing to do is, lay out the best seven you found, then send in the 'worst' of that group for grading. The investment will be a valuable bit of education as to the quality of the other six coins.
Your photos, by the way, was a huge blur for me.
Thanks to all for the quick welcome.
Rick
If I can decipher that photo I would guess it looks very nice. Most times people are disappointed in roll purchases so it would be great if we could hear about a success. It would also be nice to see a better photo so I hope you have fun experimenting with coin photography!
I don't understand why DennisH says send in the 'worst' of the 7 best. I would send in the very best. Anyway if I understand things properly you might need to send in 5 coins minimum. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
When I unwrapped the roll I had the impression that the coins had not been pawed through. This roll had "First National Bank of Nevada, Reno Nev." stamped on the roll along with a teller number. I do not think this roll had been around since 1883; I think a bank made up these rolls out of mint bags but I am not very clear on how these things were done.
I plan on sending out the best 5 coins to be graded; I have a couple of raw coins I want to get certified anyhow.
Welcome to the forum!
Grading coins is NOT EASY. However, I suggest you try looking
at some of the great pictures on this forum and perhaps the PCGS
registry section. At the very least its fun to looks at them
Ofcourse, nothing beats looking at coins in-hand. Try going to
shows and getting slabbed coins for examination. Bring along
your best coins and get somebody's opinion.
Good luck with the roll!!

I've looked at lots of the coins here; it has been of great assistance. I also used this website:
http://home1.gte.net/res05izg/morgan/hiend.html
Pictures can't give you a grade I know but the more coins you look at, the better you get at grading I guess. Using the site above, I have 7 coins above MS 65 out of this roll but as I said originally my skills in this area are minimal.

We share the same last name.
Link for your site.
Looks like a site I will be using in the future.
I'd be happy to get one or two 65s out of a roll.Hope you do get a 66/67 or two.
If the coins are as fine as you suspect, you have certainly defied the odds, big-time. I will keep my fingers crossed on your behalf.
If you do not have someone reliable in your area who can evaluate/screen the coins for you, I'd be happy to do so, at no charge, if you care to send them to me for inspection. If you do not know who I am and would not feel comfortable doing that, please feel free to check me out, without fear of offending me. I think caution is a good thing.
No matter what, best of luck to you.
I appreciate your offer Mark. I think I will go ahead and submit these coins to PCGS. I have a reference set of certified coins through MS 65 and feel somewhat qualified to tell if the coin in question is better equal or worse than the reference in question. As I have said, I fell that 7 of this roll exceed my MS 65 references; five coins in that reference group.
I understand that if I get great coins, I have defied the odds. What the heck things happen. I bought a roll in 1992 from a flea markey vendor near my home; not a wrapped roll. It had a VAM 44, three VAM 33s and a VAM 41 and 41A. All 1878, 7/8. Maybe i jsut get lucky.
I will take better pictures this weekend. Also, I will report the grades in January.
Rick
