It's listed as 1942/D. It should read 1942/1 D. I'm not sure he knows what he is selling.

  • well he has a circ 45-D walking liberty half for BIN $100 that I could buy for $3 anywhere else. I'm guessing the merc is a 42-D.

That's a nice coin. Only problem is that it looks like a 1942 dime worth about $0.70.

If you enlarge it, it does look like a 42/1, though can't be sure as the image is faily low res and lot of pixellation where enlarged.

I supposed I could ask the seller a question or two regarding his 1942/D "rarity" but I saw the word "overrate," rather than "overdate," in his description.

Then I decided to share with you all.image

The genuine overdate is not all that easy to detect, even to the experienced eye. Sure hope the partial "1" that should be there doesn't prove to be just a scratch or such. As for enlarging the poor image I think too much can go wrong with pixels.

You've hit it on the head. For the price the NTC coins go for one can live with a true 64 or even a 63 -- not even full bands -- in an NTC holder, but a fake? OUUCHH!! NTC is not an authentication service, but rather a grading only service. Nowhere on their website/collateral do they gurantee authenticity. Any real collector or dealer possesing a true 42/1 dime would send in to either PCGS or NGC, even ANACS for that matter, and a novice wouldn't even know that NTC exists -- so the only candidate that would send it to NTC would be "someone in the know"...and this is the point of concern. Someone in the know would send such a "prize" to NTC? HHHMMMM. I'm not a gambling man, but I would lay odds the coin is fake.

    Just my 2 cents image

No guarantee of authenticy, eh? That is interesting. I've learned to steer clear of coins in these holders since something always looks funny about them whenever/wherever I see them offered.

Must be my better instincts kicking in.

"Of course there will be no returns allowed on slabbed coins since I am just selling their opinion."

So, if there is NO OPINION on AUTHENTICITY from the slabber where, of course, does that put your buyer who finds out the coin purchased from you has been deemed by the authenticity experts (NGC, PCGS, ANACS, ICG, take your pick) to be a fake?

    Good grief.
