Why is this coin so expensive?

I have to know why this 2 zlote is selling for as much as it is. My 1998 Krause has a list price of $8 in UNC. I might see a reason for it to be selling for this much if it were a MS-65 but it is only a MS-62 so why is it so expensive? I would have really liked to have gotten it but I do not think that it is worth that much. I was thinking of going about $40 but I never thought it would get this high.image

The 2005 Krause has it at $16.50 in BU. I think it is just a matter of Krause being way off on the value.

I have a beautifully toned 5 zloty in an Anacs holder. Paid about the same price. However it's MS65

  • I think it might be a very underated type coin. I had a 1933 10 Zlotych (Warsaw mint) of the same design that I sold on Ebay that brought about five times catalog price. I bought the coin from a very knowledgable world coin dealer in Texas many years ago that told me the coin's scarcity was way out of proportion to the low cat price. He also told me about some Portugese coins that he said would skyrocket and he was certainly right about that. Some of the low priced "sleepers" he told me about I was never able to find at all.

These actually are hard to come by in Unc. and the design is extremely popular.

I'll have to take a trip to my bank to get it. Maybe towards the weekend.

  • It is up to $71 and still has an hour left. I can't wait to see what it sells for.image

  • Any diehard Polish coin collectors out there?
Pure speculation on my part, but avoiding the Ebay conspiracy theories (although I believe in many of them..)

I don't know a lot of Polish history. Was this a good or bad conomic time, where coins might have been hoarded or spent?

I also wonder about the history of several years later. If the Polish coins remained in circulation 7-10 years, there was probably very good reason to melt them down for their silver content in 1939-1944.

  • Price seems a bit high to me. I actually got one of those in one of my "world coin lots" that I bought by the pound for $7.95 so I got mine cheap, circulated of course but cheap all the same. image

Mr Stanislaus my next door neighbor who is a Polish National told me during one of our conversations that the Russians and the Germans plundered much of the gold and silver bullion currency from Poland during the second world war and so it was not commonly seen when he was growing up. It makes me wonder how many of the bullion coins truely remain that were not melted during the war years.

Just about all pre-WWII Polish coins are very very scarce in true uncirculated. $71 is not a high price for this coin.

My experience tells me pre-WWII Polish coins are severely undervalued in Krause. I buy as many of them as I can a t coin shows and don't have any problem in paying Krause for a lot of them.

  • No, Mark, I did not even place a bid on it. I will wait for another one. It looked like a very nice coin but that is a little more then I was wanting to spend.image
  • This has actually been the first true UNC of this coin that I've seen. Ever. Having said that $71 is actually a fair price. I'd pay more for a nicer UNC example.
  • So I guess I screwed up then when I didn't try to get it.image
  • nah, you decided to wait for another one. Don't let the "hindsight" trap get you. There are a few more out there yet.

Rats, if I'd known you weren't going for it, I'd have bid on it! image Oh, well. After all the Christmas shopping, my credit card could stand a little less stress.
