  • I have always found its easiest to just put a proof 00 next to the ms cent for comparison, since this variety is supposed to be from the striking of a ms planchett with a proof die. Not only is there a gap between the
A & M (not sure what the measurement actually is), but the distance between the initials fg to the right of the memorial steps is different also. On the ms dies, the fg is further out from the steps than they are on the proof dies.

By the way, I want to thank you for the nice mint wrapped TN rolls you sold meimage

Look at an 80's cent. They didn't do narrow until ~94?

  • You could also compare it to any other 2000 cent you have.

It's easily discernable with a 5X. If you have young, sharp eyes you don't even need a glass.

Do you have a recent Proof set available? Looks exactly like any recent Lincoln Proof....easy to see!

Not a proof die, a normal die made with a proof design hub. A proof die would have different treatment that would show on the coin.

If you're curious as to the difference in the design, take any cent dated 1989-1992 and compare it to the coin you have. The reverse design should be the same. Not only is there a distinct difference in the spacing of the AM, but there is also an astute difference in the positioning of the designer's initials.

  • My type 1 business strike is farther away then the type 2 proof,so what does all this mean?
    leon
  • Roger you are a gentleman.I know the 2000 wide A and M is further away than the type 2 but who am I to say. There are a lot of guys and gals on this forum who think they are so far advance in this business that they can not lower them selves to answere a question like the one I posted. The ten or so who answered my question
are generally the same informative gentlemen who give me feedback on other questions I have asked and I do appreciate their professional advice. My questions may be minor to these other so called collectors but this forum is not only for the people who think they are the high and mighty but they are for guys like me.My big thing is collecting the ERRORS because I think they are tougher to get. Believe me ,I have a lot of them.I probably have more of the good stuff than the guys who think it's below their standards to answere minor questions like mine. Now that I said my piece,GOOD DAY to those who think they are IT.

I happen to agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't say much here because of this. And thank you coppercoins for setting me straight on proof die vs proof design hub. I only have a little general knowledge of this variety coin, and coin collecting in general. But the point remains, by asking questions here that may seem unimportant to others, you tend to leave yourself wide open for footprints. I think there are some people around here that tend to forget the feeling they had the first time they picked up a coin that fascinated them to no end. That initial spark that set them to collecting coins and how much work they
did to gain that knowlege. It only comes thru research, mistakes, experience, and of course "asking questions."

It would take more specificity than "80s" because the design changed then too. All 1974-1986 cents are made from one design, then it was changed again in 1987. The design known as "wide AM" was born then, and retired for business strike coins in 1992. The "close AM" design started in 1993 and remains today.

    design A - 1959
    design B - 1960-1967
    design C - 1968-1972
    design D - 1973
    design E - 1974-1986
    design F - 1987-1992
    design G - 1993-2004

Did you ever stop to consider that maybe there aren't a whole bunch of people that collect Lincolns and know the answer? How about every time you ask a question everyone just posts to say "I don't know." Would that soothe your feelings about being ignored?

  • Well, you asked your qestion, according to my computer, at 5:40 AM on Sunday morning and then you seem to get upset that no one has been sitting up all night and has dropped everything to answer your question in less than 20 minutes.

Also sometimes the reason you don't get answers for any but the usual group is because once the question has been answered there is no reason for the rest of us the chime in with a "yes, that's right."

Knowledge is Power and supposedly this is where the "knowledgable" people are...."the dealers and the experts". They weren't born with this knowledge. They either made a lot of mistakes and or also had to ask questions or study in one way or another in order to become "learned". Some tend to forget this. They forget a time when they...." didnt know."

There ARE some real quality people here, particularly when you get them alone, One on One. There are also some that become quite full of themselves. They do not handle Power well at all and think it makes them look BIG to reply with snide remarks or to berate someone.....to make themselves look "Cool" or important, when in all actuality just the opposite is true. They make themselves look small by resorting to such Schoolboy tactics. THEY are insecure and this is their way of seeking group approval.

There is no such thing as a dumb question therefore anytime you have a question, don't worrry about what others think, you go right ahead and ask. This is, afterall, why this Forum was supposedly created. Realistically though, as some have so eloquently stated, don't expect every other member to stop and line up only to repeat the same answer or to chime in and say, "That's right."

This place is literally crawling with thousands of INDIVIDUALS and no two are alike and, for the most part, each One is OK. It takes all types! If the thought of being publically humiliated troubles you I suggest you just "lurk" and seek out the one or several people(if you want more than one opinion) that you think may know the answer(s) and ask them in private. In most cases you'll find them willing to help as in a round about way they will be flattered you chose them to come to. (Psychology/ Human Behavior Patterns)
