What are the details and results of your first submission of coins to a TPG?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,103 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just read and replied to Russ's latest CHA-CHING thread. Thought I would toss out the above question.

Tell us the details and results of your first submission to a TPG. At this time I can not do so, since I all of my coins are raw virgin coins that have never been slabbed (except 3 coins that I bought already slabbed).

    An 1860 IHC I bought raw as an MS65 (to me) for $500. It's a $300 coin in 64 and $1100 in 65

For $30, PCGS graded it MS64, due to some weakness in the tail feathers in the headress I assume.

I held on to it for a couple of years, but then sold it for $400. It was probably the nicest 64 there ever was (and probably now in a 65 holder) image

The results on my first submission were terrible, with a capital T. Not just my first, but probably my first five or six. I sent a lot of junk before I finally started to get a clue.

Not my very first submission, but very early on, I bought a 1849 gold dollar bought thinking MS62 but had a scratch the dealer didn't think would pass through PCGS. Came back 63 which was double the money. I didn't send it in thinking 63 all the way. I sent it in just for authentication!

Great stories, keep them coming. I like the ones where the results are equal to or better than expected (I guess cuz I am an optomistic fellow).

Russ, the 1966 Jeffy is the nicest 1966 CAM SMS I have seen. I have a 1965 that looks similar to the 1966 but it is not as boldly contrasted on the reverse as the 1966.

It was so long ago (~'87), I can't remember all the coins I sent in. I sent at least a proof '38 nickel, a proof '56 half, and an MS '44 quarter to PCGS. The results for these coins were PR66, PR66, and MS64 (ouch). The other coins in the submission all did well, but I don't remember what they were.

edited to add: I still have the nickel.

My first group to ANACS was a complete disaster. I sent 3 Bust halfs that I bought as AU. All three came back net graded as cleaned. Sent an 1889-CC that I bought as F15. It also came back cleaned, F15 net VG10. And my final coin was an 1891-CC that I bought as MS63. It came back AU58, but it does show the VAM-3 spitting eagle varity. This was before I found this board. I have learned a lot and I thank you all for the education.

I bought 5 or 6 Walkers raw and sent them in. I expected at least MS66 on all of them.

One was bagged, one was au58, the rest were 65 (although I think one was 63 or something ridiculous).
It was brutal but I think everyone needs to submit every now and again.

Graded a few of the coins I got at various Bowers and Ruddy auctions in the mid 1980s with NGC. This was probably around 1998.

As I recall, there was an MS-63 1867 three cent nickel, an AU-50 1920-S SLQ, an MS-65 1896 V-nickel, an MS-64 1829 half dime, an MS-63BN 1850 large cent, an MS-61 1895-S Barber Half (purchased as Choice AU) and an MS-63RB 1881 IHC.

Here are mine: First PCGS Coin Submission - April 2004

Here are the grades that I received on the 10 Morgan Dollars which I submitted via economy grade service during the April PCGS Las Vegas Invitational.

I am really pleased with the 1880-CC in 64-DMPL, the 1890-CC in 63 DMPL and the 1891-CC in 63 PL image

The 1881-S in MS-66 is kind of cool, since it's the only Morgan that I now own in MS-66 -- and I made it! image

    1879-S S$1 USA MS65
    1880-CC S$1 (8/High 7) USA MS64DM
    1880-S S$1 USA MS63PL
    1881-S S$1 USA MS66
    1881-S S$1 USA MS64
    1882 S$1 USA MS63PL
    1890-CC S$1 USA MS63DM
    1890-S S$1 USA MS64

I think the first coin I ever submitted was a 1916-d Dime to ANACS, came back Vg-8.

The first coin to PCGS was an 1869 indian head, came back Au-53.

Yes, I would say you did o.k. That is better than any expert could ever hope for, let alone a first submission. Collector or dealer?

My first PCGS submission was from my Washington quarter album set. I sent 32-40 complete, and if memory serves, the 32-D was AU-58, the 36-D was whizzed, and the others were in the MS63-MS64 range. I wish I had them back for what I sold them for. image

I first submitted 2 coins through a dealer...

1915-d Lincoln Cent ms64rd (cracked out of ICG ms65rd holder)
1926-s Lincoln Cent ms64rb (cracked out of ICG ms63rb holder image )

And a few weeks later I joined the collectors club...

1911-d Lincoln Cent ms64rd (cracked out of ICG ms65rd holder)
1915-s Lincoln Cent ms64rb (cracked out of NGC ms63rb holder image)
1964-d Lincoln Cent ms66rd (hoped was ms67, still think it might upgrade someday)
1968-s Lincoln Cent ms65rd (hoped was ms67, okay, my mistake)
    1980-d Lincoln Cent ms67rd image
    1982-d Lincoln Cent ms67rd (hoped was ms68)
    1997 Lincoln Cent ms67rd
1997 Lincoln Cent ms68rd image was pop 4/0 at the time

My first TPG coin was a 1972 Die 3 DDO that I picked out of a cash register, it went to ANACS and came back MS64RD. The second coin was a 1922 Plain that I cherrypicked from a Whitman folder at an auction, it came back from ANACS as 1922 No D (the good die pair) Good 4.

My first PCGS coin was in 1994 or 1995, a raw a922-D cent I bought over the counter from Stacks in New York City. The dealer tried to talk me out of submitting it, but I insisted I knew it would be worth it. It came back MS65RD.

It's been all downhill from there. image

  • A friend at work wanted me to check out some coins his dad had. Amongst the Buffalo Nickels was a 1913-S Type 2. Needless to say, I bought it from him.

I decided to submit to PCGS at the Long Beach show in June 2000. I wanted it mostly for authentication purposes since I was thinking of selling it. I thought it was a VG-8, but it came back F-15. I learned later that the 1913-S is notorious for weak strikes, so evidently that was taken into account on the grade.

My first submission was over 2 years ago. I think it was a 1924 saint in ms63, 1882 half eagle in au55, 1921 morgan in 64 and one other coin that graded less than I thought but can't remember what it was now.

    nccoin,

I am a collector. I started very young but sold out for my first car right after the silver crash. I started back up more seriously in 2002. I started focusing on Morgan dollars about six months ago. I always wanted to start a coin business on the side but I can not convince my wife it woud be a good thing.....

    image

But I enjoy looking at raw Morgans and finding out I have a decent eye at grading and cerifying them higher...image

My first submission was in 1988, and consisted of 6 coins that I had purchased between 1971 and 1980:

    1913-D Buffalo, Type 1, purchased in 1971 (I don't remember the original cost) - PCGS 64 (had hoped for a 65)
    1919-P Buffalo, purchased in 1978 for $43 - PCGS 65 image
1879 Seated Quarter (my icon coin), purchased in 1971 for $95 - PCGS 65!!! A big image
1925 Standing Liberty Quarter, purchased in 1980 for $600 (Ouch! A case of bad timing) - PCGS 65
1933-D Oregon Trail, purchased in 1980 for $625 (bad timing again!) PCGS 64 (had hoped for a 65)
    1923-P Peace dollar, purchased in 1973 for $6 - PCGS 65

I still have all of those coins except the '23-P dollar. They were bid at the ridiculous price of $525, so I unloaded that one right away, trading it and $200 cash for a 1900-S quarter graded PCGS 63. I think I came out a winner on that deal. image

All in all, I think I did well for the first time.

After a few years of collecting, I had accumulated a short stack of "expensive" raw coins that I simply wanted to preserve, and double check my knowledge before spending REAL money. Sent them off to ANACS since they were cheaper, and would slab any mistakes I made:

    Coin / Bought as / I thought... / Actual / Comment
    1881 Morgan / MS-64 / 64, shot 65 / MS-64 / Was also worried it might net due to one pin scratch
    1896O Morgan / XF-45 / AU-50 / AU-58 / Check the price guide difference!! Cha-Ching!!!
    1879S Morgan / MS-64 / MS-65 / MS-65 / Felt good!
    1806 Half / Fine / F-15 / F-15 / Confirmed my grading....
1806, 5/6 half / Fine / F-15 / VF detail, Net F-12 / Called it cleaned AND corroded. Don't agree, but then again it isn't VF details either. image
    1807 Dr B. Half / VG / F-12 /VG-10 / Oh, well. I guess I was dreaming.
    Fugio / VF / VF /VF-20 / Ok
1843 Std $ /Fine /F-15 /VF-20 / Alright! Guess they are forgiving of "full Liberty".
1872 Std $ /Fine /F-15 / XF Detail, Net VF-30/ Net due to scratch. Again, wasn't really XF anyway!!
1875S 20cent / Unc detail, lightly cleaned/ Net AU / AU detail, net XF-40 / Damn....I should have known better!

All in all, I felt pretty good. A few mistakes, a few head scratchers, but mainly I figured I knew enough to allow myself to start getting a bit more advanced in my purchases.
    Easily distracted Type Collector
  • My first is at PCGS right now...sent in one lonely coin...1890-CC Morgan....bought raw 4 years ago as MS61....solid 63, chance 64...will post when I get the grade....if I hit this one, many more to follow. I waited and waited, until I thought I was worthy of giving PCGS my money...
