Well I was out today and...

My girlfriend and I went shopping for a kitten today for her mom for Christmas. We went to a million different places and I was about to kill myself when we found one that was next to a card shop. I told her to shop and I would be next door. On my way in I held the door open for an older gentleman. I heard him say to the owner that he was looking for a really old card. This got my attention in a hurry. As I was listening to the two talk he said that his 10 year old grandson had really been wanting a card of some guy he had never heard of named Honus Wagner. The owner replied that he had also never heard of the player. This is when I chimmed in and asked how much he was expecting to spend on this card. He replied that his grandson really wanted it and he was willing to pay $50 for it. The whole time I am laughing on the inside. I told the guy that the card he was looking for was somewhat rare and could cost a bit more. When he asked about how much more I got a kick out of telling him that it has sold in the past for over 1 million. His jaw dropped along with the store owners. We talked a bit more and I explained to them why there were so few of the card and why the price was so great. I ever went has far to say that there were two for auction now that he could bid on. He sort of shaked his head and laughed...needless to say I think the grandson will have a better chance if he asks Santa. This was the highlight of my day and I thought you guys would get as much of a laugh out of it as I did.

  • I suppose he could get his grand kid a nice replica for under $50.
Also I find it strange the owner of the card shop didn't know who
    Honus Wagner is.

The guy should be out of business is he doesnt know the name "Honus".. You could probably outsmart him on some deals if he has anything decent..

You were about to kill yourself and you were just shopping. Imagine what it's like to work in a mall card shop. You deal with people who are convinced your stuff is overpriced junk and everything they have is gold. Kids coming in looking for Yugioh or whatever, or else just shoplifting. Parents coming in looking for gifts but they don't know what they're looking for. The dealer might've just been tired of dealing with people, and here comes some genius asking for the most expensive card in the world. On the other hand, Wagner does have more cards than just the T-206.

BTW, do cats breed in the winter? A friend worked in a petshop in college and he said they always got besieged with calls for kittens but they never had any because cats don't breed at this time of year.

I learned this today too. None the less we did find a 3 month old kitten. WooHoo...feel my joy.

Also the cardshop is mostly Nascar oriented with some modern cards still I couldnt believe the owner didnt know Honus.

Since I cant afford a real t206 Wagner, I really like the one I have.. (no offense to the anti-game used people)

Not sure when cats breed, but there are a host of really nice affordable wagners out there. E.g. 60F Baseball Greats#62 is a good example - this one is on ebay and only one bid of 15 bucks with a few days to go:

And this 51T Connie Mack All-star card will probably go for around 275$.

  • Yeah I feel for mall-based card shop workers, partially due to my own oversights as a young tween-teen; I once went into a shop saying I had "a significant amount of money to spend... about $70"... I could see his eyes rolling to where he could probably see his brain image

Next time you go to that card shop you can ask if he heard of that "Babe Ruth guy!" A real surprise that the guy in the card shop who hadn't heard of that Honus guy was a NASCAR person! Ha, ha!

Cats are seasonal breeders. Cats have a gestation of just over 2 months, and begin to cycle in late Jan - early Feb with Kittens appearing in early Spring. The cycling lasts until Aug/Sept, with the last kittens appearing in Oct/Nov.

Shopping for a kitten? Are you serious? That's like shopping for grass clippings! Go to a shelter and rescue a young cat for little or no money. They are much less hassle than a kitten and just as much fun. Don't forget to spay/neuter.

Best advice I've read on this board in months. I cringed when I read the words "shopping for a kitten". Save a life - adopt a cat.

I agree. We adopted an abused kitten and she is doing very well...we didn't need another but I feel good that she is sound asleep on my bed...safe and sound.

  • Oh, I've got plenty of her memorabilia! Perhaps a pelt swatch . . .
  • everyone who said to adopt a cat has not been out lately. this is exactly what i thought at first. the first shelter i went to they wanted me to fill out an application, the second one had an adoption fee of $75. i finally found one in a pet store for $29. i really think it is easier to adopt a child.lol

I didn't know there were so many cat lovers here lol. I would recommend getting a trading journal or newspaper, there is usually someone giving away cats. Heck if I thought it would survive I would mail you one- the lady down the street lives with roughly six million of them.

I saved this scan because it won't host indefinitely but I did go looking for it a while back and found it again but I don't know the seller - but when they put the item up (if he does again) - do the search
under the title....Bling Bling Sling...and you should find the seller - it is not for sale right now. There ought to be a law against them looking that good!!! image
