Why do you suppose this Franklin was awarded a star by NGC?

Franklin, MS66*

Do you think that they should award stars to white coins, or should the honor be reserved for toned pieces?

My guess is that it has eye popping luster.

Absolutely should be given to white coins when outstanding. I bet this one is a blazing stunner in person.
  • My bet is on exceptional luster for the date/mm but an excess of hits that keep the coin from 67... or maybe it's a superbly struck coin that had awesome bell lines, but had a tiny tick on a bell line that kept it from FBLing...

Luster, not to mention the devices of this coin are frosted judging from the picture both front and back. Better than the typical 58 by a long shot.

57P and 58P Franklins are hard to find in original white condition, as many of these are mint set toned or are brilliant due to dipping. Perhaps it got a star for its originality or luster.

Many times they give the * because the coin is so darn bright from the dipping that it is just eye-popping. Some like it....some don't.

Looks like a scan, which can tend to dull the way the coin appears.

Thanks for the heads up on this one. I would have easily overlooked it and missed out on the first bright white STAR NGC coin I've seen or heard of.

-I'll post photos when it arrives!

  • I can imagine that it's pretty frosty with good luster, but I really do not like the coin....Look at a closeup...is ole Ben's nose running?

  • According to their web site:

"That * is designated for superior eye appeal" and.... "We don't currently star any coin that is under MS63. "

    There ya have it.....

My guess has already been mentioned a couple of times, it has booming luster. Pat here is another bright white lustrous coin that I own that garnered a star. I pulled it out of an original set and the luster and strike just grab you.
