Questionable Proof Set auctions on eBay...

I've been looking at proof sets for a week on eBay and just looking for good stuff can be fustrating...

This is and inventory photo, this is only a stock photo, photos of blue cardboard boxes (closed) with the set inside, you will receive a set of "similar" quality, yada, yada, yada...

And now this...

eBAY Proof Set Auction

It's obvious these are mutiple pics of the same proof sets as the dates are illegible.

eBay should crack down on these shady items and give sellers a choice to either show a pic of the actual item or no pic at all.

  • Looks to me like the coins themselves are the same pic repeated. image

I looked at some of their other auctions and almost all of them do the same thing. Repeat the coin pics over and over.

I agree, but as long as ebay is making money, they won't do anything.

  • Yeah, this guy is so lazy he will not even use the correct date proof set as a stock photo. The really stupid listings show a stock photo of the blue box.

If the seller does not state for sure whether you receive the set pictured or if it is a stock photo, you have to ask.

I think Ebay should require disclosure in the listing as to whether or not it is a stock photo. I would like to see Ebay ban stock photos, but that is probably asking too much (Ebay would lose money on lazy sellers).

  • Also, in the advanced search, you may want to exclude sellers who litter ebay with mutliple proof set listings with stock photos (or sell proof set envelopes like vernon coin), it will may make your browsing a little more pleasurable.

Agreed! And really... who the hell cares?! It's a stock photo anyways... you can't guarantee ANYTHING on quality from a stock photo, so why even buy? I don't even take a second look at auction titles that I know are from dealers that sell sets with stock photos...

If you buy his coins, you're gonna get it in the shorts.

Good advice that I will heed. Thanks!

Actually I know that seller. He deals in wholesale logoed clothes, and he likes proof sets. He is a volume seller who uses stock photos. But he is a very nice person and he brings plenty of extra proof sets to the local shows. Saves me a lot of traveling from dealer to dealer. He does not cherrypick so once a month of help him sort through his proof sets!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Marty, thanks for your post. You and Russ obviously buy plenty of proof sets from your submission "you suck" threads image . It's just so fustrating to know who to trust on eBay. When I see stock photos or repetitive photos of the same coins, my first reaction is "he's trying to screw me." Thanks for clarifying this issue.

Not to sound too scarcastic. But they have this feature on E-Bay called

    << <i>Ask the seller a question... >>

I have a marco set up that prints, This the picture in the auction the set I will receive or are you using stock photos... Works for me. Most sellers that

<< <i>what you see is what you get >>

will usually E-Mail you back and let you know, the stock photos will tell you that they are or not E-Mail back at all. There are some (Russ and I have both been burned) sellers that will say they ship what the picture is and you get a POS set in the mail...

I take the time to scan the exact set I'm selling.

That's why mine sell for $1.25

Those are aftermarket creations, certainly not original.
