Dec.14 Update: Looking for volunteers/helpers to help stop this guy from selling fake Trade and Seat

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
The Ebay seller "looktony" whose current items for sale are linked below, knowingly sells fake Trade and Seated Liberty Dollars on Ebay, virtually every week.

In each listing he states "I know nothing about coins so all sales are final" but he knows exactly what he's doing and has been reminded of such more than once. I have left him negative feedback twice and written to Ebay at least two times, but have had no success thus far.

He sells MANY of these fakes/copies and many of them look identical.

Now, in his newer listings, I see that he is making/keeping the bidder's identities private, presumably so that no one can warn them.

I realize that buyers should take some responsibility for their own actions, etc., but feel that does not excuse such behavior on the part of the seller.

So, to anyone who cares to try to put an end to this, I ask that you contact Ebay, let them know this guy is selling fakes and ask that they put a stop to it. Thanks in advance for any help you care to provide, and please know that I understand and respect your right to disagree with me.

When going through the ebay system to report them, all I could find was a web form where you could input the item numbers, with no way to add any explanation. Is there another mechanism I didn't find?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I have reported this loser to eBay on at least FIVE different occasions, and each time I gave them 5-10 examples of this seller's OBVIOUS fakes.

They have apparently never tried to stop it.

  • Unless you provide positive proof (side by side photo comparision of these Chinese-made coins to the real deal) that these items are improperly listed as real coins, why should Ebay pull this auction? Afterall, it looks like what he describes, a Trade Dollar, and he says he knows nothing about coins. In Ebay's eyes, he's done nothing wrong.

    So, as always, BUYER BEWARE.
If a buyer can't educate him/herself by reading this forum or buy buying a book........ then a fool and his money are soon parted.

Maybe the forum ought to start a thread with the top ten types of fakes/scams/bad deals on Ebay and how to identify them?

  • I sent him a "question" stating they are fake and that he should pull the auctions. I'm sure he will end the auction based on my feedback, not!

I also filed a complaint with ebay.

Done. But they didn't do anything about 2centsin's altered coins. I think contacting his local police department would be a better avenue.

  • It sucks that your feedback rating is suffering because you expose scammers but it is highly commendable. Just goes to show how little that feedback percentile really means.
  • There's a mark on them that shows they are counterfeit. I have one of the 1876 CC trade dollars just like the one he has up for auction. And I want the 1877 one. I paid exactly $14 for my 1876 CC. They were being sold on eBay last Feb., but the seller had them advertised as fakes.

  • Does anybody know this seller personally ? Has anyone corresponded with them about this? Is he known on eBay as being a scam artist?

I think you guys made a difference - thanks again for your efforts.

I received the following email from Ebay today:

    The following listing:

    3942453459 - 1875 us dollar

has been removed from eBay for violating eBay policy. Since this listing was removed, you are not required to complete the transaction.

Next time, try contacting the free press. They love to do exposes. And, eBay is a biggie for them that's certain to grab headlines.

Looking at the seller's latest listings, it appears that Ebay made him change his descriptions/disclaimers.

In each case he now says:"....... The dollar looks and feels real but i dont know if real so selling as a fake....... Diameter size is the same as a real US silver dollar. But selling as a fake dollar with no refunds."

He knows they are copies/fakes and is still trying to deceive buyers. But, at least this is an improvement, and you guys get credit for it. Thanks for the help

They should require him to have "fake" in the title, since it is the most important description in the auction, and also make him inform all of his previous customers the truth about what they purchased before re-instating himimage----------------------BigE

Seems to me that the coins are still in violation of the "Hobby Protection Act", (is that the right title?), so eBay should still be rather interested......

Even tho eBay's general policy is...

<<Sellers may not disclaim knowledge of, or responsibility for, the authenticity or legality of the items offered in their listings.

Sellers should take steps to satisfy themselves that their items are authentic before listing them on eBay. If you cannot verify the authenticity of an item, do not list it.

The following examples violate eBay's Authenticity Disclaimer Policy:
"I cannot guarantee the authenticity of this item, so please bid accordingly."
    "Vintage Handbag Chanel???"
    Warning:
The repeated use of authenticity disclaimers could result in the ending of your listings and possible suspension from eBay.
    >>

    and...

<<eBay does not permit the sale of coins or paper money that are fraudulent or improperly described. Sellers who knowingly fail to disclose information about the authenticity of coins or paper money, alterations to coins or paper money, or other information that might have a material impact on the coin or paper money value may be reported to the American Numismatic Association, and if deemed fraudulent may, at eBay's discretion be removed from the Web site. Sellers with a pattern of deceptive listing practices may be suspended from all eBay buying and selling activity. >>

They also fudge with this little tidbit...

<<If you're unsure of the origin or authenticity of your coins or paper money, please state this clearly in the listing. >>

This is all the wiggle room sellers like that need to skate by on.
