image Nice Job!!! "Great Coin", Lee
  • i know nothing of these.

Why is it an R6 ?
    image
  • Why is one pic a slabbed coin but not the other?
  • If I had to guess these are scans and the flat side of the staple would
not scratch the flat bed of the scanner. The coin was placed on a plastic
holder to image the side with the bent ends.

Survival estimates of this die variety in this grade is 19-24 pieces

    The R scale denotes rarity

Good looking half from what I see. Mintage of 658,000 for $68. Sounds like a score to me. image

What is the variety diagnostic for the WB-104? 1864-S is a great half dollar without the variety.
  • The diagnostics for the 104 are a "small thin mintmark"......... The size/style of the MM aren"t obvious in the picture, but if you know that there were only 4 reverse dies used for 1864-S halves, and you have pics or examples of WB101, WB102, and WB103 in hand, you immediately know it isn't WB101 (That one has a much larger MM), so that leaves WB102, 103, or 104........... If you draw an imaginary line down thru the center of the MM on the remaining 3 possibilities, you will find that the line would fall between the L & F of "HALF" on the 102 and 103 varieties...... If you look at the coin linked here WB-104, you'll see that the imaginary line would fall over the upright of the "F" in "HALF"......... Hence, by the process of elimination........... SCORE !!!!!!!!!

There were 4 different obverse dies used in 1864, and 4 different reverse dies, producing 5 different marriages.........
