2004 Mint sets how high will they go?

It must be the Christmas thing??? $40+ for a 04 mint set on Ebay. I sold 10 this last week in the $33 range and felt great now they are at $40+ What gives and how will this effect the high end top POP coins? I have 10 sets that I was going to cut up and send coins in but it is now $400 in inventory not the $160 it was when I got them.

I bought 10 sets, submitted the high (and a few not so high) grades, and have 4 complete sets. left. They can pay for the 10 I bought, the submitted coins were free, and the remaining coins can be loose change.

The mintage is very low relative to many of those issued in the past but there
are many factors which dictate the price in the short or long term. In the short term
the primary determinants are the number available on the market and the demand
from those who missed out on the ordering period. In the longer run it will be deter-
mined by the total value of the typical coins found in the sets. The market will factor
in the typical quality and then seek the sets. Eventually there will be a price difference
between sets based on their quality.

Some sets will contain virtually the entire production of the gems of a given coin.

It wouldn't be surprising to see this set do far better in the short run than in the long
run if the new coins are being saved in the percieved quantities.

I found an unopened 2004 set a couple of weeks ago from a dealer at our club's November show. He ask $20 for it and I grabbed it up. I have not looked at it yet, but the 5 sets that I got from the mint were nothing to write home about. The lincolns were almost totally spotted. They are not nearly as nice as the 2003 sets were.

Thanks for bringing up the topic. Prices top out at...?? I think this year will prove to be an especially tough to find in 50 years. Most 2003 and 2004 have been butchered for the GEM coins they contained. If you doubt that the 2003 Mint sets will be rare, look at the 03 Lincoln P and D pop reports which are both approaching 1000 or higher in GEM grades. These coins have been cut from the mint sets. JMHO of course but I'd hoard the 03 and 04 sets if you can.

Yes, I was one of those that missed out on both the 2004 mint sets and the 2004 clad proof set. I normally order my US Mint stuff around November of the year so I can get everything I want all at one time. This year I can see the error of my ways.

Only one other time I missed out because I waited, that was on the Massachusetts First Day Cover. With that item, I waited quite a while for the fever to die down and managed to get it for under $30. For a while, they were selling for upwards $100 or more. That's crazy!

But the good news is, I know where I can pick up 6 2004 mint sets for $17 each. That'll just leave the clad proof sets to ponder.

That is tough when you have a gimme MS68 state quater worth $80 bucks, or any other coinworth more than the set itself. I still have my 10 primo sts intact but i don't know how much longer? I busted up my first set got 3 MS68's and sold them combined for $800.

While I agree most high grade cents probably came from mint sets, I don't follow the logic that "Most 2003 and 2004 have been butchered". Even if all slabbed moderns came from mint sets, these numbers are small compared to the number of sets produced.

Certainly the slabbing of coins from mint sets accounts for relatively little of the
destruction of the sets. There are a lot of people collecting raw coins and buying
sets themselves. There is also a market for the singles. This market is pretty
small for late date mint sets because the coins can be obtained elsewhere but
it does exist. Some of the mass marketers claim to use mint set coins for their
plated products. While this may not be entirely believable they have on occasion
offered plated states coins which hadn't yet been issued except in mint sets.

There are a lot of surprises coming in the mint sets.
