A few questions for BJ Searls

I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask, or if this is the right forum to ask it in, but ...

I'm the owner of the Just Having Fun Registry Set for Standing Liberty Quarters. I'm getting ready to post pictures.

As I looked through my catalog, it struck me that -- besides the coins in this #1 set -- I had some wonderful coins that other SLQ collectors would love to see, including, for instance ...

-- The Standing Liberty Quarter pattern: Judd 1796A, believed to be the only one outside the Smithsonian.

-- A 1918-S struck 10% off center, yet still graded MS64 FULL HEAD by PCGS!

-- A 1919 struck 50% off center, graded XF45

-- Another 1919 Standing Liberty Quarter, this one Broadstruck, and still MS67 FULL HEAD!

My questions are ...

1. Would it be a maximum no-no if, say, instead of posting a picture of my 1919 in MS68 that listed in the registry set, if I posted a picture (which I think is more interesting) of my Broadstruck 1919 in MS67 Full head? The 1919 in 1968 is a beautiful coin; but the Broadstruck one in MS67 full head is unique and totally fascinating. And in the "owners comments" section, I would explain the substitution and the reason for it.

2. I think SLQ collectors want to see the 1916 graded MS 67 Full head in my Registry set. So I wouldn't want to substitute the pattern for that. But who cares about, say, the 1929 graded MS 67 Full head? There are 2 squintillion of them. But the pattern is unique.

Would you and PCGS be upset if I posted my SLQ pattern in the slot for the 1929 SLQ? Again, explaining the substitution in the "owner comments" section.

3. In a situation like the 1919, where I have an MS 68 not full head and an MS 67 Full head, is there any simple way to figuring out which would give the higher set rating? Or do I simply have to plug in each coin and calculate.

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to ask these question and...

Why not send BJ a direct email to make sure she sees these questions. I believe her email in bj@collectors.com

Can't you put images in the "description"? It is that annoying huge text box on that screen you have to click continue on EVERY time you want to enter a new coin (no idea why I have to see it everytime when I rarely want to change the description)

Apparently, there's a trick to that. I haven't figured it out, but others have.

JHF, you can create composite images.....you can list one coin in the set but the image file can actually show 2 or 3 coins. You can write in the description field any comments pertaining to the xtra 2 or 3 fields. here's an example - this is the ColorMeQuarters set on the Washington Quarter Registry. Check out the 1939D quarter, the 1949D quarter, and the 1951S quarter for example.....you'll see there is two pictures (really its one poicture file with multiple images consolidated together).

    JHF,

If you have a problem posting these coins as an attachment within your set, you can always post them here and have a link to the posting in the Registry Forum to the Thread that contains your pictures.

I for one am more than interested in seeing your collection.

Any further updates on the disposition of your duplicates ?

    Good luck.

  • JHF, Go for it, I don't think there is a policy against posting whatever picture (as long as someone does not get offended and complain) on any your coins. I would LOVE to see the MS68 FH 20D!!!!!!!

    Justhavingfun,
I don't work for PCGS but I can answer this questionimage A 1919 MS68 and a 1919 MS67FH are worth exactly the same number of pointsimage If you enter the broadstruck Full Head, both the image will match and your Full Head % will increaseimageimageimage

Concerning the pattern, I agree that inserting it in your comment section would be best. Some of the Merc people know how to do this well. Perhaps one will chime in. Enjoy! Or rather, "Just keep having fun"

    JHF,

If you ckick here, you can see that the 1919 gets one bonus point for a full head. Consequently, I believe that your MS68 and MS67FH are equal in weight and your set should rate the same no matter which one you enter.

    Don (#12)

BTW, your Standing Libs. set is the most envied (from this seat, anyway) in the whole PCGS Registry! image
Can't wait for the pics.! image

Why not just ask BJ to add 10 or so empty slots to the template? I don't see why they wouldn't do that, and put a little asterisk that says "not included in the scoring."
    Doug
  • Thank you Typetone! Actually, I got wonderful answers explanations from other people on the message board.

And now, there are some suggestions below, that would be helpful to have Searl's input on -- Like DMWJr's suggestion to "add 10 or so empty slots to the template? I don't see why they wouldn't do that, and put a little asterisk that says 'not included in the scoring'."

Dear Son of a gunk: I don't know if I can put pictures in the description, but especially in the Standing Liberty Quarters, I filled up that box with words. So I unfortunately, I don't have space for a picture.

Well, hello Mr. Trade Dollar Nut: Glad to hear from you again, on a topic where we're not going toe-to-toe, this time!

Mr. Colorful Coins has the definitive solution to the problem "you can create composite images.....you can list one coin in the set but the image file can actually show 2 or 3 coins. You can write in the description field any comments pertaining to the xtra 2 or 3 fields."

Great going. Thank you so much!

Dear MFH: I'm in discussions with Mitch right now about which which coins are the singles and which are the duplicates to sell. But the duplicates may not go on the market directly because Mitch is trying to organize a swap of some of my duplicates for upgrades.

Hello Clackamas: You write "I would LOVE to see the MS68 FH 20D!!!!!!! "

Me too. Some of these coins -- especially in the Standing Liberties, Shield Nickels, Jeffersons, and US-Philippines -- are like old friends of mine. But I'm in Thailand and most of my coins are in the states. So until my secretary can get the scans in, I can't visit with my friends. Out here, my staff says my "palayah is khun le-ann" (my wife is my coins).

Dear Cool Karma and Quattro Coins: Thanks for the explanation about MS68 versus MS67 FH. Now I understand it and know how to figure it in the future.

The MS68, by the way, is definitely not full head; but it's also not a smushed head. It's a very attractive coin. To me, it has more eye appeal than the MS67FH.

    Best wishes from Thailand,

    Just Having Fun!

You can put IMAGES IN THE DESCRIPTION using html.image

P.S. html for one image goes in the set description:

    "<center><img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/oldattachments/1902_gold_obv.jpg" border="0"></center>"

The coins could be put in his collectors showcase section I believe.

  • Dear MFH:

My son arrives this coming Wednesday and he may be bringing some of my coins with him. If he does, it will probably be an incomplete mix of one of my "Best Known Ever" collections.

I'll buy a nice camera for my secretary out here in Bangkok, and have her photograph the coins for me. If she can figure out how to post the pic's in my registry, it's a done deal.

    Warm regards,

    Just Having FUn

    JHF,

This ought be to interesting. All I hear from members on the Forums is that its so hard to
capture the essence of the coin, and that lighting is paramount for good results.

Regardless, I am waiting with anticipitation !!!

I have done the same with my wife's Kennedy set. She collects the colored ones, toned for us politically correct individuals. I have posted her toned coins in the slots where photos go. BUT, I have included the serial number of the higher graded coin in the registry set. Then, in the description, I state the look of the real coin in the set along with the qualifying factor in the coin's description. That way, she can have her cake and eat it too. I don't consider it cheating, Like Russ says, I call it creative problem solving.

EVERYONE knows what a bight white MS Kennedy looks like. But, how many have seen a pretty toned one? She has about 2 dozen that have nice toning with spares of a few dates. Same with your coins. We have all seen photos of nice coins, but how many have seen high grade FH SLQ's in pop top grade? Since you're Just Having Fun, why not go for broke? Show us your stuff!!!! Ray

I did something similar, you can check my registry and see a nice photo in the description. This would be an ideal place for you to show and describe what you want.
