Forgive me if this has been raised before.....

Having only just found out that the Royal Mint intends to issue a different version of St George this year, I was wondering if has anyone seen the new design ?

What's the general feeling on messing with St George ?

The last time the Royal Mint tampered with the Pistrucci design was 1935 and the results were mixed at best. If they are doing this as a one year thing I guess it is o.k., but I hope Pistrucci will be back next year. I have not seen the new design.

I would not mind seeing the Wyon reverse, but given the Royal Mint's history over the last 40 years I'd bet the St. George they use will either be drawn by a six year old or some pot-head modern artist.

A while back the BRM issued a set of 3 round silver gift boxes that featured Pistrucci's, Wyon's and Metcalf's (rocking horse) St George for the top cover. That makes me think they have or can produce the dies quite easily. Although the Metcalf design would be good, it is just too modern for me.

I guess we will know by January when the bullion version Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns come out.

I love that Boehm statue, Cruzi!! It sure would be interesting to see it used. Maybe you can park that thought in the RM's suggestion box.

Here's more info on the Wyon St George design:

William Wyon (1795-1851), medallist and chief-engraver at the Royal Mint, London engraved the medal shown dated 1845



based on a design by Leonard Charles Wyon (1826-91), member of the celebrated dynasty of coin, medal and seal engravers, and the son of William Wyon shown below



That would make Leonard Charles, 19 when the medal with his St George design was issued. Also, note the subtle difference in William's interpretation of a slighter build on St George and the horse from the Leonard Charles drawing.

I have suggested at least on a couple of occasions that the BRM issue a coin or medal re-using the Wyon St George design so who knows. Maybe they'll treat me with a pleasant surprise. In any case, I am pretty excited with the new St George reverse and am eagerly anticipating its official launch (keeping my fingers crossed).
