Unusual Morgan. I Can't Quite Figure Out How it Was Toned.

It' PCGS, and the Colors Look Pretty.

But for the life of me I can't figure out the toning source?

Looks like it was first bag toned. Then it may have been placed in an album, or somehow else exposed to tape, which likely resulted in the line on the reverse. Oh, and someone was eating a burger when making the bag-->album transition

APN is probably on the mark, with the exception of the hamburger comment. The stripe on the back was probably one of those tabs that many holders had that allowed you to pop the coin out of the hole to see the reverse.

For some reason, 1878's, of all varieties, have some of the most unusual and often interesting toning of any of the Morgan series. Forum member WWW is our resident expert on that date and can show you any number of examples of this date with unusual toning.

It's a stripe coin. There were a couple of manufacturers of albums in the 70s that used a hard plastic half capsule for the obverse of the coin, and the reverse was held in place by a strap. New England Rare Coin Gallery albums had a narrow stripe on the reverse, and I have yet to find out who issued the albums with the wide stripe on the reverse.

I bought the coin featured in this Thread because the color impressed me and perplexed me at the same time.

Nice one, Pat and I think GSAGUY and K6AZ are correct about the source of the toning.
The 78's, as Bryan has mentioned offer some unusual toning patterns. Here's one of mine,
also an 8 tail feather that has album and envelope toning. Too bad it's only a NGC MS62,
but I'll take what I can get, when I can afford to get it.
