My completed(?) Dansco 7070 type set (pics)

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Got 2 Seated Qs in today's mail to finish(?) the set. Cracked them out, put them in the album, and took some pics. Commems never interested me, so the 4 half-dollar holes remain empty. I filled the Commem dollar hole only because I already had the coin. Haven't decided yet about doin the gold page. Also, the question mark remains as I haven't decided whether or not any coins will be upgraded in the future. Thanks to Baley for sharing his beautiful set online and giving me the inspiration to get started on this.

Regarding the pics, I'm not proud of them - too much uneven lighting and glare. These were done with 1 or 2 desk lamps, as I do for individual coins. I think a larger, more uniform light may work better, so I'll try taking them outside and see what happens. Any suggestions re photographing album pages appreciated...

    Very Nice Barry! image

I think you pictures are pretty good; it's tough to get all the coins on a page or half page to "look right"; usually, you can only show off one or two coins in their best light, at the expense of the others. My next project for pictures of the set is to show it line by line, with the reverses of the coins below. I also need to work on the relative sizing, so the coins look proportional to each other. One more thing I find tough is trying to get all the album pages to appear the same color.

What a fun set! You obviously took a great deal of care in selecting your coins... but c'mon, admit it, you crave a few upgrades, right? image

    VERY, very nice. image

dorkkarl would bash me, but I'm still too chicken to crack out my slabbed upgrades to put in my old album.

My two reasons are 1) I think the coins are better protected and stored in the slabs and 2) I keep my album at home (with some F-12 coins) and the slabs in the bank safe deposit box.

But it is nice to be able to look at coins all at once in album form.

    Great Set! Drool Drool!

Is it just the picture or is the large cent ( Cornet '38) too small or the hole too big?

Anyone know the best online source for Dansco 7070's?
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
    Thanks all.
Heywood - you are correct. Either the hole is too big or the coin is too small.
Baley - the way I got the page size uniform is using the Save for Web command in Photoshop, and selecting 700 pixels as the page size, except the moderns at the end, I chose 500 pixels.
TWQG - I buy most of my stuff from Brent-Krueger. Good prices and very nice and helpful always.

A few holes are too large or small and you have to cut it to make it larger or put something in the slot to keep the coin from sliding.

Very nice set, Barry! That Coronet cent is delicious! image

You can be proud of that set. Very nice.

Where do you go now ? Add the gold page ?

  • Do the commems !! Those holes will nag at you...
  • AWESOME!!!!

Just the set I want to collect! Wow that is nice.

Where did you get that album?
  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
DoctorPaper - The '32 bust half came out of an AU55 slab. The vast majority of these coins (except the obvious ones) were slabbed.
Zulan - The album is a Dansco 7070. I got it from Brent-Krueger.

Nice set, Barry. Out of curisoity, what percent of the 19th century coins were purchased raw vs. slabbed?

    Robert,
The 3 Half Cents were raw. The earlier 2 Large Cents were raw and the later two slabbed.
The FE/IHCs were raw (the 1907 was slabbed, but that's not 19th cent image ).
All the early nickels were slabbed except the 1883 (cents).
All the 19th cent silver was slabbed, except the 1828 dime.

    Congratulations Barry, great looking set!

I was really excited that I'm just two coins away from finishing my EF-40+ 7070 Type Set w/ Gold Page myself, but after seeing some of your coins, I'm convinced that I need to find better examples of a couple of my current specimens image

Dang, that is PRETTY. Brings back memories. A very nice set and a terrific historical record of US coins.

    Hang onto that.

I always hated page 2. It just "nickel and dimes" you to death.

    Very nice set.

It is interesting that a couple of seated Quarters finished your set. I just got in a MS62 1853 A&R quarter to finish my set. I haven't been able to get good pictures of mine. I am determined to post decent pictures of mine. I'm thinking of a scanner, but am afraid of glare.

That is a very good - no - excellent collection. Something I drool over. If you want to get some really good photos take the set outside and find a nice open shady spot on a clear, bright day. Take along a piece of 81/2 X 11 white paper to use as a selective shade to knock off excessive reflections. Use a tripod and select an aperture of f8 or f11 (depending on your lens and camera). Use exposure compensation from -.5 to + 1.0 for each shot ( that's 5 to 8 frames per shot). Then only show the best - never admit that you took five or ten shots to get one good one LOL.

Thanks for the advice Steve. I tried a few shots this afternoon, but my shots picked up a bit of a red cast. I tried adjusting it in Photoshop, but didn't like the results. Made the red coppers look funky. Think I"m going to do a custom white balance when I'm ready to take the pics again.

    Very cool Barry!
    Nice accomplishment.

I've wondered...people that do Type sets, and do a complete set of a series.....do you consider a coin from your series for your type set or do you get another one?
ie.... do you buy another one just for the type set?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I love the look of your barber dime. Is it unc.?

Bochiman - I have the dime sets completed. There's no way I was going to leave a hole in them, so I bought new coins for the type set. With the 2 and 3 cent pieces, I kept the nicest coin and sold off the sets.

Abmluce - I love that Barber dime. The coin was in an ANACS slab marked UNC details, cleaned, net AU55. Cleaned or not, it's a beautiful coin. Here's a blow-up for you:

Dansco doesn 't include bust dollars in their silver dollar types?
  • Nice set. The reeded edge half and no motto seated dollar look especially nice from where I'm sitting.

  • Excellent type set. Well done! This is not an easy set to put together. You should definitely fill the classic commems. There's some beauties out there.

Here's what I do about the lighting challenge. I also use two simple desk lamps. However it's impossible for me to get the lighting right for an entire page. So I adjust the lighting for one row of coins at a time. In other words, each row is a separate pic. Like you, I then resize the width to 700 pixels so that they are all uniform. No need to resize the heigth.

Unless you have a better lighting set up then desk lamps, don't bother trying to get a pic of the whole page at once. Again, do one row at a time.

Lastly, I do some minor adjustment to the contrast in Paint Shop Pro using levels to get the contrast on the pages to match.

Back to the coins...where did you get your 2 early large cents? I need some leads!

As many others have stated that is a very lovely set, nice accomplishment. I really like the looks of it. Trish my girlfriend hopes her sets turns out at least half as nice.

Thanks, your post came at the perfect time. I believe you have me convinced to go with a Dansco for Trish for X-Mas.

Couple of questions now that I hope one of you can please answer? I did not set a hole for No Star Seated Libertys. Is this a varity that is not associated with the Dans 7070. This happens to be one of favorite coins in her collection.

I also saw that it looks as if your earliest coranet large cent sits losely in the hole, was this a flaw in the Dansco album or was there a change to the diameter of the Coranets half way through the run. If it's a flaw with the Dansco album, how commen is this, don't know if I would like that.

    Thanks a bunch

  • Very Sweet Set!!!!! Congrads on such a great accomplishment. Clearly one of the best matched and overall most eye appealing set i've ever seen. Between your's, Baley's, and everyone else's type sets on this board, we have some very nice collections going!

SDCollector - The 2 early Large Cents I got at a local show. The 1803 is more coin than I needed for a type set (it's a less common variety, S-247), but I liked it when I saw it. DLRC and the Heritage Internet Only auctions were the 2 sources from whom I got the most coins.

Captian Ron - Yes, this was brought up earlier in the thread. The Coronet LC is loose in the hole. There are no holes for No Star Seated Libs. I guess it's a tough call to decide what should be included at what not. Personally, I would have preferred to see them over three different IHCs, and some of the varieties where the only difference is on the reverse, which is not readily viewed in the album such as Motto/No Motto Seated and Cent/NoCents LibNicks. Maybe they should have labelled the reverse of each page also... But we all have our own preferences and they had to draw a line somewhere to keep the album a reasonable size.

Again, thanks for all the nice comments. I probably will do the gold page next. I already have about half the coins, and maybe I'll find the rest in Baltimore in 2 weeks.
