The Best of Type Proof Trade Dollar

That's right, and I'm sure everyone here will have their own opinion about whether the overall designation "Best of Type" should go to this coin or to an MS-69 circulation strike. All I can say is I know which I would rather own, and show, and whatever your opinion, I would love to hear.

I would take TDN's 1876 MS Trade Dollar, PCGS 67, I think. It is not the highest graded circulation strike, but is has the most awesome eye appeal of any Trade Dollar I have ever seen. The coin is breathtaking in person.

I would take the NGC PR69 trade dollar - utterly amazing coin and ex Knoxville. A close runner up is the ex Silberman PCGS PR67 Cameo that was in the grading finals. I graded the coin PR68 and it would bring that value easily.

As far as Mint State coins go, I have two favorites:

  • Steve,

That is absolutely one of the most beautiful coins if not the most
beautiful coin I have ever saw in the hobby, the business, at any
    show or collection. image

  • I think the trade dollar you display with the rosey and lovely light
acqua tones is one of the finest toned coins I have had the
pleasure of observing. I tend to place coins in two catagories
toned and non-toned. Steve and yourself have given us all a
    rare treat tonight.

  • Perhaps I should've done a better population report for everyone. Looking at the registries, I find nothing competitive from PCGS. By the most updated NGC count, I get some 68*s but only 2 PR68-UCAMS (including this), then a 1 PR-69 not-CAM, and no circulation strike 69s. That was an error, please permit me to acknowledge. On principle, for the frost I still prefer a PR68UCAM to a PR69 (also I wonder whether it would really cross to PCGS as a 69?), as a Morgan Dollar collector might. In practice, I would love to see the PR69 and find out.

I am thrilled to have recently bought my first proof trade dollar. After collecting for years, I decided a few months ago that I was going to treat myself to something really nice. So I considered all the well known cool coins that I could buy for about $4,000 (svdb, 55 d.die, 3 leg buffalo, 16-d dime, etc) and concluded that I wanted either a proof seated or trade dollar. Here is my result:

  • Great discussion, but before this becomes the permanent Trade Dollar forum, I think I would like to close the thread, at least on this board. Enjoy the pictures, and more neat stuff to come, and thanks!!
