grant star....the only one known

ngc just gave me aprox 10,220 point for my new addition to my commem set...the coin`s origin is well known as it is a specimen 65 grant star and hails from the john sinnok estate....where he was kmown to make a special coin or two for his personal collection ...the 10,220 points awarded are aprox the same as a lafayette dollar in ms 67 would get however there are 10 layayette`s in 67 and this is a unique coin and pop 1...in all grades as it`s the only one known

ngc told me that they gave it just about the amount of points a grant star in ms 68 would get....now a grant star in 68 is rare and so is a lafayette in 67....but the sinook specimen is rarer by far....thus the coin should be given more points than a lafayette in 67

do you agree

Maybe this would be more appropriate in the NGC forums ?

Be happy they gave you any points at all! Gardner's half dime set has half the coins unscored... still ... after several years.

MM, a very cool coin which I believe I saw a number of years ago while a grader at NGC.

I can't really agree or disagree with you (sorry to be so boring and non-committal), as I think it's a case of apples (an apparently unique specimen example) vs. oranges (regular/business-strike issues). image

But, if you were to force me to take a stand....... I'd say that I think you should be thankful NGC was willing to award points for such an unusual/esoteric item, which is not really part of the recognized silver commemorative sets.

If someone else owned it and had been awarded more points than you have received, would you be fine with it? Play devil's advocate and make a case for the other side.image
  • That coin sure does sound like a monster! I think NGC gave you a fair amount of points. I always thought the special coins shouldn't get so many points that it makes it impossible for others to compare sets. Why if you got all the points a unique coin could conceivably deserve you could have a #1 ranking set with just one coin!

I think its registry related and is just fine right here.

Neat piece! Just think of it as pegging out. Maybe the needle doesn't go past 10,220.

your right i checked...it doesnt get much higher than that...its point value is just below a grant star ms 68..or at a lafeyette dollar in ms67....at 100,000 a pop...if you can find one

The high-graded Grant w/ stars are numismatic rarities. Congratulations on finding one of the special ones.

    So you're saying it's a trial piece?

I think they did what they did simply because they could do what they did and I am sure they thought it through before going through with their award of point. It really is pointless to point out they didn't give you what you feel aren't enough points. As you can see I am firm on my thoughts.

In reality, I am sure they awarded the points they deemed correct. They simply could have lumped it in with the other Grant coins and you would have a lot less points.

Congrats on a "one of a kind!"

How many points would they give for a 1933 Saint Gaudens?

the coin is from the john sinnock estate who was the chief engraver for the mint from 1925 to 1947...john was an avid collector and "made a few" for his personal collection

now keep in mind proof coinage is not that hard to spot for an experienced numismatist because of its tell tale signs of it`s
" method of manufacture "....the coin is white and has concave and convex die polishing lines on it...which means both the dies and the planchet where polished ....which then proves the " method of manufacture "....and thus proves intent.....which was our dear old friend john sinnock making one for his collection

not braggin but ( ok a little )

about 10 years ago when i was doing my morgan set i ran across a pl-ish 1921-s....it was "different looking"...when i pulled out my loupe i could see why it looked different..it had those same concave and convex polishing lines on it....well i gladly paid the 4,000 for the coin and submitted it to pcgs with a letter of explanation....well the coin went on a "tour of the gurus" and was flown around the country for 6 weeks ( so much for my $100 one day service ) and boom...pcgs branchmint proofed it ..pop 1 ..only one known...and was traced by the " method of manufacture " back to feran zerbe and his cross country trip to the SF mint in 1921 to commemorate the striking of the 1921 morgan after a 17 years hiatus ...where as he traveled all the way there by train in 1921 and upon his arrival the mint discovered the philadelphia had shiped the wrong dies....well the superintentant was really embarrased....as it was going to take a month to get the right ones....so what would you do if you were the sup.....thats right polish up the dies and polish up a few planchets and "make a few" ( 24 to be exact ) for feran to passify him...it worked and feran gave his booty to his friends ( yeah he kept one for himself )....the others have gone the way of most free stuff we get today and have been circulated beyond diagnostics....and someone wanted that pop 1...only one known so bad that it was a 20 bagger for me...which i elected to acept and put into other coins.....one of which turned out to be another pop 1 only one known and a moose of a branchmint proof dollar...and would you believe a lafayette dollar in 68

i`l tell you about them next visit....cause i have to go now

  • opps i forgot....the morgan is an 1887-0 branchmint proof ...pop 1 only one known....the lafayette is to die for.....gives me a woody....but there is one more secret coin im working on ( and have been so for a few years now but gettin close now ) .... its a gold planchet instead of a silver one...its the only one known and has all the documentation about how it came to be.....and to me is 5 times rarer than a 1913 nickel

john was an avid collector and "made a few" for his personal collection

hey, he was just carrying out a tried and true tradition. the 1800's are awash with many "special" coins which were quite obviously the result of Mint employee clandestine efforts. i wonder what 100 years will reveal about today??

I don't know how many points it should be worth (here or there or anywhere) but that is an outstanding coin to own image

I'd give you a bazillion points.
