__7 New Darkside coins back from ICG (smile)__

My group of Darkside coins came back from ICG yesterday!
I'm not concerned with the grades, but I do like them better in the holders.

BTW: I compressed the pictures to make it faster for the web, so they're not high quality.

Here's the three Austrian Thalers:

imageimageimage

I actually picked up the Austria 1624 from eBay for about $65 image
It was almost too big for the holder, and I like how they used one of the black inert inserts (and cut it out by hand) to make it fit.
I saw another Austria on eBay and they used the clear insert and cut it into (4) triangles to wedge the coin. IMHO it looked bad.
I think the 1624 should have been a VF-30 DC for 'Darkside Cameo'

I like the German Thalers the best, and LOVE the color on the 'Three Brothers'
It's got some nice Rainbow (can't see in the tiny pic)
"Oh, King August",,, "That's a Mighty Big Sword you have there!"

imageimage

I think I picked up the Patagon from eBay last year - if I remember it wasn't expensive

image

And these early American Spanish Colonial coins are tough to find.
I'm suprised they slabbed it because it looks like a clipped GB shilling...
(It's a TypeII Carlos and Johanna, Pillar with Waves)
Anyone know if this could be from Aztec silver - it would make a great story.

Did you send the coins to ICG for attribution or for grades?

Do you intend to resell them?

Are the slabs for peace of mind only?

The reason I ask is that I see a lot of foreign pieces slabbed and selling for well over Krause (beaucoup over Krause!). Given the age of your coins I might agree that attribution is important, hence the slab...

To be honest, I'm not sure WHY I slabbed them except that you get a good deal from ICG slabbing world coins priced under $300.
I guess it was more for the attribution, but I was concerned that two of the coins (from eBay) might have been counterfeit. So, I picked a group of large silver from my collection, and decided to give it a try. I must admit that they DO look much better in the holders. I honestly don't care about the grades (they're all circulated anyway) and DID receive two coins back in body bags. One of them was a Cartwheel twopence (it had light grafitti in the field) but I think it is a 'Presentation' piece. The other one has 'altered surfaces' and it looks cleaned underneath the toning... I might put up pictures of them in a subsequent post. Besides the blasphemy, I'm not sure WHY I slabbed them, but I do like them better now.

Next idea: NGC has an $11 deal for ANA members...might be time to send in some more modern (1800-1900s) darkside that I have with Rainbow toning.

If I'm not mistaken, it is now $14/coin.

I'm surprised ICG would even have you send in a British twopence cartwheel. That coin is too large, really thick, to fit in their holder. I don't know of any grading service, with the possible exception of ICCS, who will 'slab' these. ICG told me they wouldn't when I owned an UNC example of the coin.

I've seen two Cartwheels in ANACS holders. Now THAT was a tight fit.

Thanks for the tip on the new NGC price for ANA members. -Jeff

One pence Cartwheels fit in holders. I've had 2 in ANACS holders and one in a PCGS holder. The 2p don't fit.

A bit of heresy, image but I like the coins, and appreciate your presence over here.

    Howdy JZ -

You're right - they are tough to find. And to answer your question - no. The Aztecs used gold primarily for jewelry and decorative purposes. It was the Spaniards who discovered and founded the silver mines.

By the way - ICG didn't give you a proper attritibution on that little beauty. If you can post a larger image of obv & rev - I'd be happy to fix that for you image

NGC will also grade coins that are too large for their holders. They just send it back in a flip with the slab insert.
