1937 Canada half dollar color toned

I don't know much about Canadian coinage but when offered this one today I hesitated for a minute then bought it. Do Canadian coins such as this carry a big premium for colorful toning? Is this coin proof or MS? The toning on the dated side looks like something I would see in an early US mint set- did Canada offer mint sets as well this early? I'll post a picture of the other side in a bit. mike image

The area's that look like marks are areas that are not toned.

High grade Canadian (MS65 and higher) goes for a premium. While there is also a premium for attractively toned coins, there does not appear to be any hard and fast rules, but the premium as not like it is for Morgan Dollars. I like the coin and it is worthy of a submission. It is mostlikely a PL business strike

      • That looks like the type of toning that comes from a case. There were both matte and mirrored specimen coins in 1937. I couldn't tell you if yours is one, though.

So this could be a proof? I just have a price list for Canadian stuff out of coin world and they only list business strikes. Anyone with more info on proofs of this vintage? mike image

        Great snag DT!

I don't know why, but I never find any Canadian toners.

Values from 2004 Charlton: in Canadian $'s

        Business strike:
        MS60 $40, MS63 $100, MS65 $1000

        Specimen strike
        Mirror SP63 $400, SP65 $1000, SP67 $2000
        Matte SP63 $125, SP65 $300, SP67 $900

Yours looks like a business strike the rims don't look sharp enough to be a specimen strike. My guess would be MS64 around $300-$400.

The Royal Canadian Mint didn't strike proofs until 1973, but specimens are the next closest thing. Only the matte proofs were sold to the general public through the Bank of Canada (for the low, low price of $3.25 per set).
