Ever dip a Nickel Jefferson and have it graded? I never have, I will acetone them but not dip them. I dipped a test coin tonight and it seemed to have worked but it has not gone to PCGS (actually this coin never will but...). basically I am trying to remove haze from mint set cello. Goo Gone is not working too well, acetone does nothing, I am at a loss.

I sent one to NCS once right when the first opened for business. They did a good job and the nickel looks exactly like it did when I got it back from them so it seems stable.

I used MS70 on (2) 1952-D Jefferson nickels that had album haze on them. I sent them into PCGS about 2 1/2 years ago and they both came back from PCGS as MS66 Full Steps.

It worked for me

... I don't have these coins as I sold them shortly after I had them graded. I wish I had kept them based on the $$$ today.

MS70 is the best for removing haze and will not hurt nickels.

try "Dawn" dish soap

Actually not a bad idea. I have removed haze from Silver proof Washingtons with Soft Soap. Works great.

I am confused.

How do you clean without rubbing the coin. Will it not show abrasion marks? How do you use the acetone? Do you rinse with water and do you use your fingers to get all of the residue off?

I had a '16-P Merc with ugly brown toning. Dipped it briefly in Tarn-X (!!!!!!!!), rinsed in distilled water, and patted dry with soft cloth (do not use paper towel!) Submitted to PCGS - came back MS65FB and looks great! No loss of mint luster after the BRIEF dip.

I really don't recommend this method, but I gave it a try on a coin that wasn't too much to ruin, if in fact, I had.

Hardware store or grocery store - it's a common metal cleaner. BRIEF dip and thorough rinsing are the key points.

I only tried dipping once. I rinsed. But I rinsed in tap water and it left spots on the coin ruining it even though I dried the coin.
