New Morgan purchase! Opinions??

anablepanablep Posts: 5,096 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just won this last night on Ebay.

image

Thought it looked PQ for the grade.

Now I'm 2 dates short for my Morgan Date set: an 1893 & 1895. I guess I'll have to go low circulated for these, which won't really go with the AU-BU set I've got now. Oh well...

I try to hunt very hard for great looking, undergraded coins that I can be proud of and feel I've invested my $$$ well. I've learned to do that mostly from reading the valuable advice from board members here. I owe a lot of what I've learned about this hobby (passion?) to this site. Thanks guys.!

Love your coin. I just did a quick scan of completed auctions on ebay and yours is the nicest
one by far. Nothing even compares. Cool!!!!!!!

Wow -- that's a KILLER 53. Some people here would be surprised that such a coin isn't in PCGS plastic. image

Nice. Conservatively a 53, but the coin appears to be better.

A nice AU coin can look better than many lower mint state coins, and this one is a beauty!

looks better than my 96 O, ANACS AU-53.

I agree. Very tightly graded, imo.
  • Very nice win, congratulations. image Some collector obviously took very good care of her over the past 110 years. I'd grade her AU55.

Edited to add: I have the complete set, but I don't have an 1895. I don't consider this part of the business strike set, since none are known to exist (proof only). The theory is that all 1895's were melted.

That is really nice, some good deals can be had in ANACS holders, if you have the time to look...

  • IMO if you can see a fairly distinct "cartwheel effect" on the obverse that's close to the one you see on the reverse, I think ANACS was low by a notch on this beauty. Nice coin.image

From the pics I would say that it looks a lot like a Barry Stuppler listing. It may not look THAT awesome in your hand tho.

I think the listing said the reverse was PL but not the obverse. That's probably what you see in the pic.

    THanks guys.

I agree. I think many people look for PCGS, and when they don't see PCGS they immediately move on. I've found some good deals in ANACS holders.

  • Anablep: Yea, looks like there might be more reverse reflectivity, but in scan it's hard to tell. I assume by "completing" your set that it's a "Date Set" (one of each year) because obviously there's no 1895 plain for circulation strike Morgans. I disagree that you will have trouble finding a nice 1893-Philidelphia in AU. I've occasionally seen some nice ones on the www.Heritagecoin.com " Exclusively Internet" weekly sales, and Bullet Sales associated with their regular auctions, the next being Nov 4-6 Palm Beach. I'd bet if you're patient that you can find a nice one in Anacs- or PCGS- AU 53/55 less than $350 there, or here from someone who posts their ebay store link.

morgannut2: Yes, I meant a date set of Morgans (I know about the 1895). After the date set, I'll continue going after the full set minus the proof 1895.
As for a nice 1893 in AU, we'll see. Patience is absolutely the key. I'm in no rush.

Of the Morgans minted in the year 1895, which mint is most obtainable in nice (F-XF) condition for a decent price?
