eBay Fraud - Second Chance Offers

We've just gotten notified by a couple of under-bidders on one of our recent eBay sales of a fraud being perpetrated by an eBay member nnichael722.

He sends email through the contact eBay member system that read as follows:

Dear xxxxxxxxx,

eBay Second Chance Offer from Seller Item number: 3934249981 You expressed interest in an item titled:1795 1/2c Lettered Edge NGC XF45BN Liberty Cap w/Pole Item number: 3934249981 by bidding, however the auction has ended with another member as the high bidder. In compliance with eBay policy, the seller is making this Second Chance Offer to you at your bid price. The seller has issued this Second Chance Offer because either the winning bidder was unable to complete the transaction or the seller has duplicate items for sale. If you accept this offer, you will be able to exchange Feedback with the seller and will be eligible for eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection. To purchase this item please contact the seller: ceprapadit@aol.com To learn more about Second Chance Offer go to: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/personal_offer.html Thank you, eBay Inc.

Thank you,
nnichael722

I am sure that others have been victims of similar scams, but I just want to encourage everyone to verify that second-chance offers come from the seller!

I also received many second chance offers. Basically, I believe the sellers used a different account to place a high bid (as reserve). If you pass the reserve, of course, he/she will sell the item to you. If you don't, he/she can then make a decision later whether to sell you.

I received second chance offer as fast as 2 minutes after auction is closed. How can seller know that the high bidder won't buy it in two minutes image

A seller can also use the second chance offer when he/she has multiples of the same item for sale.

I must get at least one or two fraud emails concerning eBay or PayPal every week.

But what REALLY annoys me are all of the spelling errors in their emails.

I mean really, if you are trying to scam people, LEARN HOW TO SPELL. Proof read!!!!

  • Bluemooncoins uses this same tactic. They set their reserve very high and send you a second chance offer immediately after closing of the auction.

Got the same email from nmicheals offering a second chance due to multiple coins (top pop 1). Secondly, I knew the seller and contacted them directly to alert them. The last warning was the requirement to wire money via Western Union to the UK prior to shipment.

  • What you have here is two totally different situations. One is a seller who is less than honest and is using multiple handles to raise bids and then give second chance offers if his high bid does not get stomped on. The other one is the more common one and it relates to very high dollar low pop coins, usually over 1000 dollars in price. In this case the seller knows nothing of the scam, the coin has been moved successfully and the buyer is satisfied. This is the one that hit me on a coin I sold. It sold for 2350 dollars and a few days after the transaction, I started getting emails from people saying someone had contacted them from a different email address purporting to be me and giving a second chance offer. After telling them no and sending all the info to ebay to investigate, I then had to go and amend all my sales when I thought the coin might go high dollar to state in my description that I do not give second chance offers and any offer of such a nature is a fraud. Be warned on high dollar coins, the con artists are alive and working feverishly to steal your money. image

  • Any second chance offers I receive are deleted immediately. A shill comes in and outbids you, now the seller knows your high bid & offers it to you for that bid!

To purchase this item please contact the seller: ceprapadit@aol.com

This is the red flag, a real second chance offer would be an a private auction on Ebay, not contact someone else (not the seller) by e-mail.

    The spelling errors are deliberate.

  • This happened to me as well. The e-mail looked very real with all the Ebay logos and graphics. But when I was asked to wire money to the UK I knew it was a scam. I sent the "real" seller a message via the Ebay "ask seller a question" feature and he verified that it was a scam. That's a great feature!

I'm bringing up this thread because I just received a fake second chance email. This one looks just like the first one commemguy posted. The user is jasonn195 out of Singapore. Ebay is filled with sharks. Be careful. Ebay does not send second chance offers by emails.

  • I have had an attempt to defraud me via these ebay "second chance" emails. image
The ebay id was jasonn14az, now deleted, with one (probably fake) recommendation.

The email addresses were jasonn14as@creditca.com and the now infamous ceprapadit@aol.com. imageimage

Having reported him / her to ebay I am still asking them to send me the pictures of the four coins that they are trying to defraud me with, and they keep sending me the same picture over and over again - its actually getting quite amusing.

Anything anyone else would like me to tell the person in my final email where I tell him / her where to go?

    Cheers,

I got one this morning on a roll of Morgan Dollars. I put a $50 dollar bid on the auction (less than a thenth of what the final sale price was) and after the auction I am being offered the a roll for my bid.

I also figured it was a scam since eBay usually does not correspond with me from Romania (looked in the message header).

I have only received one of these "second chance offers" and passed on it immediately.

    Don't trust them at all.image

I received one yesterday as well. I became suspicious after they asked for my address. Gave them my work address instead and forwarded all emails to ebay.

I've never gotten a fake second chance offer. I guess the slimeballs don't target bidders on $10 proof sets. image

One of my underbidders did get taken, though - by a scumbag named Gary out of the UK.

The only second chance offer I received (2 days ago) was legit. It shows up on your eBay page with a link that has a BIN price. I did check with the seller and it was a duplicate of an item I didn't win. He offered the duplicate to me for my max bid on the previous item.

Am I the only one that is bothered with the fact that these criminals have associated my eBay ID with my email address?

Are the criminals buying/selling items just to link ID with emails to later prey upon them?

    Just ticks me off.
  • Won't be hearing from our friend cepravadit@aol.com anymore... i sent a rather sharply written note explaining what I thought of them and their activities. imageimage

I agree with our previous poster that they collect email addresses and names as they go - rather worrying.

So it gets better, he / she was setting up multiple ebay ids like jasonn14az, jasonn15az, jasonn16az
Then one id, lib66 went and gave them all feedback at exactly the same time for one item each. The other stuff that lib66 had done looked legit for a total of 7 feedback - i wonder what was going on there... whether lib16 got hacked or whether they knew. image

All the best and don't get fooled! Tell your friends.
