British Medal-Info appreciated

Someone brought this medal into my store for sale on consignment on eBay. The medal is silver, weighs 29 grams (1 ounce) and is 36 millimeters in diameter. It appears to have been presented to someone, because the edge lettering reads "174874 SJT. C.L. MISENER-C.M.G. BDE". Any information you guys can shed on the subject is appreciated.

  • These are typical British Empire WWI War Medals. Quite common. However they usually come with a clasp at the top. It seems it has been removed on your medal.

I noticed some tooling marks at the top of the medal, so that appears to be the case.

Yes, "danglen" does all my pictures, but I have found him to be hard to deal with. He tends to be very opinionated

Is that the same obverse used on George V crowns?

Ajaan & Darkhorse are right. It is the British War Medal, 1914-1918. Over 6,500,00 were issued, making it the most common British campaign medal. It was awarded to all forces of the British Empire and given to anyone who had served in uniform or 'approved' service (such as nurses, ambulance units and transport personnel), as well as to foreign citizens who had rendered 'approved' service to the Allied cause. Although dated "1914-1918", it was also awarded to British forces involved in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War between 1918-1920. A 'suspender' was the normal attachment (a 'clasp' being an additional award) but has obviously been removed from this one. Clasps were originally planned, but never issued. The St. George-like figure, trampling the arms of the Central Powers and the emblems of death underfoot, is also said to symbolize Man's control over Nature and the forces of destruction. [Info from Peter Druckers' British Campaign Medals 1914-2000].
