Anyone heard of these?

I was on Ebay and saw some coins listed as Food and Agricultural Organization International Coins. Does anyone have any information on these? The auction says they are UN issue? The photos are lousy and its hard to see the coins, but look like a bargain for that many coins. I stared at the photo pretty close and it appears to list different countries. What do you think?

P.S. If they are cool just tell me and don't bid lol image

  • Not sure of the origins of these boards, but I have seen several of them (8 is the count, I believe). The coins are usually not uncommon coins, but most of them are uncirculated coins, and a lot of diversity.

I have seen a lot of FAO coins when I lived in Thailand. I have never seen a board for different country's coins. I like it. Do you mind if I bid?

  • I have seen these boards before. All FAO coins for a particular year, neatly presented in these folders, all coins are unc. Don, as kuhli said, there are 8 of them and this seller has all 4 lots for sale at the moment.

These were not issued by the UN or FAO.

The issuing countries were encouraged to mint them for the various FAO programs
during the '70's and '80's. Many of these were made in large numbers and actually
used in commerce. None are rare because all were sold by the UN, FAO, Franklin
Mint and other entities but a surprising number are much tougher than might have
been predicted a few years ago. Among the most popular are the $4 early issues
from several Carribean countries. Many of these are tough in nice condition but there
seems little interest in them at the current time.
