Advice needed regarding this Microsoft Service Pack 2 update

This damn thing will not leave me alone and as I was trying to turn the computer off earlier it would not or something would not let me go into Standby. Since I have Microsoft Widows XP Home Edition updates set on automatic, when I went to turn the computer off this Service Pack began installing itself. I have my computer set for automatic updates.

Well when I got up everything was whack. So, I removed this Program. So far, as far as I can tell everything seems to be OK. Anybody else have a problem with this? Did you like it or uninstall it and if you did uninstall it did you afterwards do a Systems Restore? At present I have not because prior to this thing installing itself my computer had been acting goofy.

Now my next question is, #1- How do I stop this thing from coming back and trying again and #2- If I do a systems restore, (if it's necessary) I'll have to download all over again a certain program that I successfully downloaded just last night, so you can see that this would be a problem, Before I uninstalled it, the Serv Pk 2, I kept logging in here, was being told I had logged in successfully yet had not and had to keep trying over and over in vaiin until I remembered that Service Pack 2, which of course made my mind up for me regarding the removal of this update.

Now that I have removed it, although things seem to be in working order, is there anything I must do that any of you know of from similar experience with this? For sure I'll have to change automatic installation of updates or inevitably this will happen again. So, from experience, is there anything I HAVE to do at this point after removing this Service Pk 2? Thanks

I have a Dell with Windows XP. I installed Pac -2 and things were alright

for about one week, then my puter went haywire. It froze up and could not be rebooted.

Had to call in a computor tech who spent 3 hours deleting pac-2 and fixing all of the messed up

systems. He recommended to stay away from pac-2 for about 6 months untill the bugs were worked out.

Problem seems to have something to do with not having enough memory capacity as Pac-2 uses an enoprmous

amount of it.

I almost had the same experience. I had automatic updates set to download but not install updates. I was quite distressed to find out one morning last week that SP2 was downloaded and ready to install. I completely shut off automatic updates because I didn't want to accidentally click the icon and install it in a drunken stupor or whatever


If I could completely remove it from the computer, I would prefer that. Maybe someone can tell me how.

I shut of automatic updates so it wouldn't auto-download, ordered the free SP2 CD from microsofts web site, installed it when it arrived, Turned automatic updates back on, no problems at all. Everything runs fine and it seems a little bit faster than before.

They say if your computer is "tweaked" too much you might have problems with SP2.

From what I have seen, it is best to leave it off.

Also, the one you download with auto update seems different than the one you get in one swoop. I suspect the CD version is the "good" version.

Thanks all. I MAY have gotten lucky. Xpiper, listen up ...go to where it says Control Panel, find the icon that says add and remove accessories or programs, I forget because I'm still rattled. click on the icon that says add & remove then right click and open. Displayed will be every program, on your computer along with how much memory it takes and I think it's down towards the bottom, once you find and click on Svc Pk 2, you click on remove. Then just sit back while it uninstalls. (Make sure all programs/ windows that you have running, like PCGS, eBay, Outlook express etc-are turned OFF. Close all programs and windows including firewalls first then go and find that add or remove icon, I think it was either control panel or my computer...chit man, I'm fried with this and hope I'm not confusing you....if I am, would someone a little more patient and a faster typer and more computer literate help him here) anyway you want to find this and remove it after which you will probably need to turn off the computer and restart it.

Just got off the phone with Microsoft Call 1-888-772-4357 and someone will help you free of charge 24 hrs a day. NOW THEY TELL ME! Necessity is the Mother of all invention, man! Anyway I changed the setting from automatic updates but the lady I spoke with says that sooner or later you will need this SP2 as more updates will come along that will feed off of this. Man, my whole fricking day jacking with this sux!

I restored the computer after I put it in, but it needed to be defragged also before it would run right again.

I've not had any problems with mine. Been running it since it came out. My computer is also a Dell. I alos have my computer set up for auto updates, but I always get a prompt asking me if I want to download the available updates. I remeber when SP2 was released the firsat thing I received was a read me file from Dell that had info on known bugs. So far I haven't had any problems with mine.

Best thing about SP2, No pop ups.

SP2 sucks. It's very aggressive and assumes too much. I actually had to do a systen restore on one of my PC's to go back to before the update. I advise AGAINST installing it, for now.
