PCGS just down graded my George VI cents

I cherry picked 5 George VI cents in Pittsburgh.They were all graded ms 65 red by ICCS.
I just received them back in the mail

2 1937 ms 64 red.......i graded them both ms 66 red
2 1946 ms 64 red i graded them both ms 65 red
1 1947 ms 65 red .. i graded it a shot 66 red

Anyone else have similar grading experiences ?

yes, they killed me on some silver dollars that were already graded (but out of the flips) by ICCS as MS 64's, down to MS 63's and even one MS 62.

I dunno. I just made two MS67RD 1917 Swiss 1 rappens, plus my first SP67 2 rappen. All of my copper submissions were dead-on what I expected, even the 64s which I expected to be 64s, excepting one which they gave a 65 which I really think is a touch shy on lustre to hit a 65.......but, I'm slowly training those boys in proper grade alignment


Does PCGS have a grading set for the Canadian coppers?

Were your expectations based on surfaces, stike, and lustre on the Lincoln series? . . . . I have to admit that 64 and 66 is a huge difference.

PCGS is chicken poop to grade darkside coins that high. My Eddie VII £2 was a lock PR66 MATTE PROOF with a shot at PR67 they gave it a PR64. If it was a US coin I bet it would have gotten a PR68.

I always my opinion that ICCS was the best on greyside stuff. I have seen some of the coins they've graded go 2 points higher when submitted here in the states to TPG companies. ICCS is tough! I think you've been given a raw deal.


Now to rant....sometimes, I get so tired of the lack of respect for darkside coins. Some darkside coins were struck before the U.S. was even an idea and with far, far more thought and beauty. That said I will fade back to my place.

Sorry the grades didn't go better...

Darkside coins are appreciated by those that look beyond the conventional limitations of geographic borders.

I own the PCGS #1 U.S. small cent collection.
I own the PCGS #1 Canadian small cent collection

On top of this I sent them a freshly graded George V large cent graded ms 66 red by Brian at ICCS.PCGS wanted to call it ms 65 red/brown ????

I guess I don't know Jack Schit about grading copper anymore

I know, and I know your frustration.

I bailed out of 8-10 Matron Large cents earlier this year because I had had it with trying to get those coppers properly graded.....my blood pressure is much better here in the DARK.

And, if my UK stuff needs slabbing in 20 years for it to go to auction, who will be the TPG du jour? No need to have them graded now, especially since I'm quite happy with my own grading abilities. BTW, one of those MS67RDs should have been a 68.....but who cares, right!!
I sold one and the guy is quite happy....so am I.

BTW, I can fly to pick up that 1919 Lincoln from you at any time......I think I have $10,000 lying around!!

Oh yeah, colour designations....beats me??? When I previewed literally hundreds of IHC & Lincolns in LB and Pitt, the more I looked the more confused I became......If I win the Lotto, maybe you can be my copper grading specialist!!

ICCS uses a different criteria for Red than the US grading services. If I'm not mistaken, the coin only has to be 90% red to get the 'RED' designation from ICCS.

What exactly is a grading set?

A grading set is a group of graded coins they can use as a reference. For Victorian Large Cents it would consist of a MS60, MS61, MS62 . . . MS6? example. It can be considered like a template for coins.

A cheat sheet as it were.

They are representative coins in each denom and grade range (VF, XF, AU50, MS62, MS63, MS64, MS65, MS66, etc.) which the graders use to familiarize themselves from time to time with the grading standard, especially with a series which they seldom see.

I've had a similar experience, but with silver rather than copper. PCGS graded my Canadian 1948 silver dollar a MS62, and I'm sure ICCS would've given it
at least a MS63, but I couldn't get it graded by ICCS because of customs fees coming from Canada back to the US.
