Some help grading this 1927S Peace Dollar

I came across this on ebay and thought that it might be grossly overgraded based on the pictures provided by the seller. Please let me know what you think. The seller states CH-BU.

    Steve:

If you're new to coins and inexperienced as to grading them, I strongly suggest you do not buy key and semi-key date coins that have not been graded by one of the VERY reputable grading companies.

This is expecially true with Peace dollars, which are difficult to grade anyway and are especially impossible to grade from photos alone.

The 1927-S starts taking big price jumps at MS60 and above. If he's trying to sell it as anything above AU, I suggest you leave it alone.
    When in doubt, don't.

Impossible to tell from the pic. Enough marks on it that Ch. Bu seems out of reach. Maybe unc, probably AU. I wouldn't make any more than an XF bid on it, as the obverse looks like it might be cleaned. In fact, given that I can't tell, I wouldn't bid at all.

That's one sorry looking pup! Pictures are often deceiving but there's a big gouge on the cheek, there's little
luster, and the bird has no feather details. Also the die looks worn, I can barely make out the peripheral
    letters.

Without the coin in hand, it's hard to be sure it hasn't been cleaned. Even if it's not cleaned, it's an AU coin.
  • I'm looking for nice Peace dollars atm, myself, and if that were placed before me as a choice BU, I'd walk away from it. Maybe I'm too picky, but I don't think that coin is fully struck up enough. Weak strikes are common in this series, so your choices are limited, but I'd still hold out for one with so many flat spots in the details.

Impossible to give a fair grade because the photo doesn't show any luster.
The coin can grade from AU55 to MS63 based on what I can see.

Looks to be AU55 based on the wear (look at the hair on the obverse and the feathers on the reverse).

  • Picture is limiting in trying to provide a grade..... but you can see discoloration at the beginning of the neck and rub above the eye in the hair.... The 27-s does have a weak strike but is centered like the 21' and not over the entire surface......

My "guess" based on the pictures is AU-58.....on a good day.....

    compensating for a crappy digi-pic, i'd guess ms-63.

TOUGH coin in decent ms grades.

  • I don't think they'll grade it at Pgcs. AU-55 if lucky.
