Profiles in Varieties the Kennedy Half Dollar Part I

I just thought i would share some of the many varieties of the Kennedy half dollar. I will start this series of varieties with the 1964 Accented hair Kennedy. Thanks Russ and Dheath for the photographs.

References: The Kennedy half Dollar Book by James Wiles.

1964 AH Kennedy (proof)

Designations: UVC-1, DMR-1, ODV-001, RDV-001, MDO-001, MD-1-O-II-C, MDR-001, MD-1-R-II-C

URS: 19

MARKER: Accented hair, Straight G in initials.

CROSS REFERENCE: CML 2-R-II, 3-R-II

Obverse: This is the first die for the Kennedy series. The I in LIBERTY has a weak lower left serif. the master die is doubled with a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date.

Reverse: this is the first reverse for the Kennedy series. The G in FG is straight for the designers initials. This reverse is commonly called the broken ray reverse due to the rays are not continuous. Many of the rays do not travle through the stars. this die is also master die doubled with a light spread on UNITED STATES OF , HALF DOLLAR. All ODV-001 specimens examined have been mated with RDV-001. Doubling will depend on die and hub state.

"MARKER: Accented hair, Straight G in initials."

And the missing serif on the "I" in "liberty."

I've actually sold most of mine. Not sure how many Marty has left, but PhillyJoe has more than all of us combined. There's also another guy in the Chicago area that may have even more than Joe.

My favorite coins are the accented hair Kennedys. Many I own, others I just steal Russ' ebay pictures and put the pictures in slabs.
