I mean,
<< <i>Is that a hit in from of the ear?? >>
No, the coin is just glad to see your avatar.
<< <i>"It's fake'n'bake, and I helped" >>
It's a KILLER Coin!!!
Congrats Bill.
Remember Dick's photo is twenty times or more the size of the coin. Thus, any imperfection on the coin is magnified by the same factor. Dick did a great job of capturing the coin exactly as it looks in real life...... I love the AT comments, because there ain't nobody out there who can AT a coin this pretty.... The obverse of this coin is eye popping....... Thanks to Dick for the coin and the photo.

<< <i>Is that a hit in from of the ear?? How can they give that a 68! >>
If that hit wasn't there it might be a 69!
Dennis
Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

marty a single hit does not exclude a ms 68 grade. I have seen at least 10 Washington's that are graded ms 68 (pcgs) and about 3 of those had a single hit, however the toning made up for the hit. >>
And what about the 4 nicks on the torch on the reverse? Don't they knock it down??

MS68 is not a perfect coin. As such some allowances are made for minor imperfections - what you see in the picture has been blown up like 20 times the size of a regular dime. If the nicks on the coin - all 5 of them are barely visible, even when using a 10X loupe, partially due to the overwhelming toning, then the coin is going to receive a high grade. I think this coin is appropriately graded.
And Bikingnut - it's a great series indeed
as it looks. No,... Its better. One of our fellow board member dealers made the coin. I believe it
came out of a monster mint set he had aquired. Maybe he will post here with a little back ground
on the coin. I assure you its an original beauty. No question NT.

I heard the 49D from the set made 68FB....is there a picture anywhere out there of it?? Would love to see it.

Oh, I feel honored. I sold Rainbowroosie a coin the first time I met him.

mint set. It was made at Long Beach and I think it was an upgrade coin. There was a 49P 68FB
made recently and it is possible it was an upgrade coin that came from this set.
Here's a shot of Flyingcougars 49D MS68. As you can see it bares no resemblance to yours.
I've sold a bunch of nice coins as the market has gone up, but I still have that Olympic Dollar!!

I do agree that some examples do get a little to much bump for Tone though. This coin does not fit into that catagory IMO.

<< <i>Everytime I look at the blown up pics, I find another nick or scratch hidden by the toning. I think if you were to dip this and resubmit it, it probably wouldn't even make 63. I don't think toning should have anything to do with grade. The condition of the metal under the toning should be the only thing that makes the grade. >>
There is much more to the grade than just a tiny nick or two that can be seen when the coin is blown-up to 10X. So many newbies count ticks to determine the grade they miss the big picture of the coins true grade. This coin has the WOW factor that 99.99% of coins can't even come close to and the originality is unquestionable if you know what mint set toning can look like in these years. mike

<< <i>Imagine what the Franklins and Washingtons look like out of this same mint set!!! >>
that was the first thing that ran through my mind! I have the dimes and quarters from a 54-S set in at PCGS right now that I have high hopes for( they were from a partial set so I did not feel too guilty of breaking up a set). mike
Years ago, I used to break up older sets and punch out the great dimes and slab the Franklins. Washingtons used to be throw aways....shows how forward looking I was!!

Rainbowroosies -- Is that one of the most beautiful, colorwise, in your set?
Dick -- great photos. It is sooooo hard to capture luster & color in the same pic!

I disagree with your statement. Grade includes strike characteristics, general condition of the coin, and eye appeal. In addition, to really make a thorough assessment of the coin, you need to see it in person. Some of the imperfections you claim to see could be distortions from the picture, toning, etc.
I always thought Roosies were one of the ugliest most boring coins designs ever created, but in gem unc., with wild color, I'd really like to own one.
