Morgan experts, Opinions needed.

I've been looking for a nice Morgan for my 20th century type set for a while and think I may have found one. Opinions would be greatly appreciated as I know very little about what to look for. This one to me looks like a nice example. Is the price right for this date and grade?

  • Are you looking for that specific date? In my opinion, an equally beautiful coin in the same grade can be had for much less. As to whether the price fits the date, i'm not really sure.

Not that specific date, just a nice affordable example from the 20th century.

  • Looks really nice and I really like it! Nice, warm, satin luster and the price reflects it ( which is still a reasonable asking price ). I think it`s bin worthy.

I think that Morgan $ is worthy of the BIN price. I also think it's a good example of a Morgan $. image

BikingNut: It depends on what you are looking for. If you want a beautiful fully struck satiny lustrous Morgan, then find a really nice 1881-S in MS-64 that will knock your socks off for about the same price.

Or, if you prefer a prooflike (PL or DMPL) Morgan for your type set, then perhaps you would like to find a common date like the 1880-S, 1883-O, 1884-O, 1885, 1886 or 1887 in either MS-64 PL or MS-63 DMPL for under $100. I personally feel that MS-64 PL is a very affordable grade with high eye appeal.

Or, you could step up to one of the more common Carson City Morgans like either the 1883-CC or 1884-CC (1882-CC is a bit higher priced) in either MS-63 PL or MS-64 PL for between $200 and $300. They also make beautiful type coins, with the added "CC" double mint mark pedigree.

  • A nice slabbed 64 can be bought around $52-55 at shows..

Edited to add: An 04-O may bring a little more

For a type set, if you can do it, I would get a nice CC (probably a '83 or '84) in MS64.
That's me though...for a type set I think CC would be cool.
If most of your type set, that can be done, is in the "O" mintmark, then go that route.

I would either spread to cover all mintmarks as much as possible, or try to keep them all the same as much as possible.

If you are looking for one to represent the entire series, the 1904-O would certainly not be my first choice.

The New Orleans mint had problems with quality control and didn't always produce representative pieces.

The San Francisco mint however, did do a very good job and the quality of the issues from this mint are exceptional.

The nicest affordable examples would certainly be issues of the years: 1880-S, 1881-S, 1878-S, and 1879-S.

These are by far the easiest to attain with considerable luster, nice cameos, and unbroken surfaces. Look for one in the MS64PL - MS66DMPL range but some of the 64's are quite baggy when prooflike. I think a nice PQ MS65PL at around $200-250 would work nicely. If you don't want prooflike then opt for a high-end ms64 or ms65 between $50 to $125.

I hate flat strikes on Morgans, so I wouldn't go with the one you showed. I would look at the early S mints like a few others have mentioned. That mint had it's poop in a group then. They are very plentiful and I bet you could pick a one with a killer strike for about half of the price of that one. Just do a quick search for 1880, or 1881---coins like these---1880-s There are a bunch of them out there!!!!

That is a really nice 04-o in 64, really nice...

but for a type set go with the 80-s or 81-s, they typically have really good strikes.

  • I agree with most of the prior opinions about the best dates for APPEARANCE only. However the coin you selected is very high end and PQ for the date/mint, will go up in value slowly in that older style PCGS holder, and for all you know it might be the very last Morgan ever minted! (except for the zillions of 1921s). Nice coin for the mint. Good eye.image

First of all, he wants a 20th century Morgan, so that means 1901 or later. This particular Morgan is a very nice example for this date. He is asking about a $15 premium for it, but for a 64, it is very clean. If you are looking to fill a type set hole, I think this will be a nice fit.
  • Great coin...good price...go for it!

Yea, you made the right choice. Its a good price for an 04-O in MS64. Most Morgans after 1899 (except 1921) have a mushy strike on the breast feathers & hair above Lib's ears. I believe they used new dies for these years. You did good here. Good luck with your 20th century type set...
