Do coins make you feel young again?

Hi, Everybody -

I turned 36 a while back, and I've come to the depressing realization that I'm not what most would consider "young" any more.

Have any of you gone thought this?

Do you find that spending time on a hobby somehow makes age irrelevant? When you are deep in thought about coins, do you feel like a kid again?

Dan

Wear clothes two sizes too large and your pants about 10 inches too low. Only then, will you feel young.

Definately- I started collecting when I was 10 or 11 years old, and going into a coin store or coin show gives me that feeling of being young and surrounded by so much history and beauty...... Only now it's even better, since I can spend a little bit more! image
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
  • Dan, you're at the perfect age. You can date young girls and their mothers as well. If you're married, disregard this message completely.
  • Though much older than most on these boards I feel coins have helped me keep young in spirit and I enjoy this Forum and keep company with a good many of you who are least half my age. Coins have been my Geritol....hmmm...just thinking...probably most of you wouldn't know what Geritol is...image

One can learn too much about the coin industry. That knowledge surely takes some of the luster

off collecting. I have had to totally revamp my collecting priorities in order to protect the value of my

collection. Its starting to make me feel very old, very cynical and very careful in my purchases.

Until recently I always felt young if there was no mirror around.

  • Coin collecting makes me feel a little older. When I go to a coin show I seem to be the youngest one there that's not there with my dad. It's kinda funny being 25 and in to coin collecting. I feal as if I'm part of the "in-between" age; regardless It's Fun! image

Don't know about coins making me feel young or old. But I'm feeling older. I ache when I get out of bed as often as not, and while many old-timers will laugh at my definition of "old," I turn 39 in less than two weeks. It's just a number, but my aching bones aren't!
  • Usually for a "mid-life" crisis
a person, trades in their current spouse for a new one
    or
buys a fancy sports car, or motorcycle in an attempt to recapture those lost youth moments
    or
suddenly has a "smell the roses" type of thing with a huge career change, etc cetera
    or
they suddenly start collecting coins or stamps like there is no tomorrow. image

As long as I'm younger than a lot of my coins I'm okay!

I prefer to be 100 years younger than most of my coins, but I'm afraid my budget won't support that desire.

  • Yes it makes me feel fairly young considering almost everything I collect is almost five times my age and almost all of it is over 170 years older than I am.

Want to really feel young? Collect ancients. Hard to feel old when everything you collect is 1,500 years older than you are.

It's nice being old enough to afford some of the coins you dreamed about as a kid.

    Hey Dan,

Just wait until you go to your 20th high school class reunion!

I'm 38 and I just returned from mine. My graduating class only had 89 students and 35 of them showed up to the reunion. Two of my former classmates are now grandparents. For the guys, the average hairline receeded about 2 inches and the average weight gain for everyone was probably around 60 lbs.

Although I still look twenty something and weigh only 10 lbs more than I did when I was 18 image , it was quite sobering to see such dramatic change in my former friends as many of them had been frozen in time since graduation.

  • Shamika is right-- nothing will sober you up to your true age like a class reunion, especially once you get past the 10 year ones. Or in
the collecting sense, how about what youngster collector consider to be "old" dates on coins--- like stuff from the 1960's and 1970's!

    yes...........

until i come on a certain coin boards and see all the crap going on moreso and moreso as time goes on and i see lots less good coin posts too it has become a boards of sellers and their promotion as such of their wares that are not opportunities or even values in terms of buying

but i always come back as coins are in my blood but i do not stay as long as i used to and post less and less

  • Hi,
I just turned 35 I am told and I am having a great time with aging image I like it! More experience, a touch of wisdom (he said modestly) ..as far as the condition of the vessel...I guess it worked out even but it wasn't the best deal IMHO - same weight of 120#, but all my hair is gone..

    Best,

Any time spent playing - could be at coins or anything else - makes me feel younger. Of course, "play" is a state of mind. Take coins too seriously and you might as well just go to work.

Always, especially when I thought of the first $100 coin I bought and got yelled at from my parents and family members.

What in the ****s matter with you, paying $125 for a penny*
