  • If taco sauce can remove the tarnish and luster from copper, imagine what it does to your stomach.

  • Interesting. Apparently, the vinegar changes the copper from the +2 to the +1 form, which the salt (chlorine ion) easily reacts with. I had always thought tomatoes had something to do with it, but I guess I was wrong.

It's truly funny, no make that truly sad, that people in this day and age are so wrapped up in their own little world that they refuse to try and teach someone else the correct or accepted way of doing things.

People drink Coka Cola and it destroys coins?

Wonder what it does to the stomach?

Very funny. If this were a science fair project, and you were the judge, how would you grade it? Don't forget that you are ALSO a numismatist image

doesnt a few weeks of sitting in coca cola actually make a penny dissapear?
  • Coca cola can dissolve bone, teeth, eggshells, basically anything with hard calcium in it. If it worked faster, you could probably use it to remove the hard water stains from yout tub and tile.

Dark colored soft drinks contain phosphoric acid to solubilize the material. I suppose you would also have

carbonic acid from the carbination. These two acids can do a hell of a job on coins in just 24 hours.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • Your stomach contains hydrochloric acid, which has a pH of about 0.1. Vinegar has a pH of 2.9. If the mucous membrane in my stomach can protect me from CHl, I'm not worried about vinegar, nor the effects of meat in cola over-night (which was done on Mythbusters. The meat was very much still there, as was the tooth.).

Well simply put a penny in a ripe tomato as well smoe processed tomato products from your grocer. The acidity present will probly clean the coin. Vinegar is not known to reduce cupric ion to cuprous state.

WOW - what a mental image I just had....scrubbing a bust with Big Mac sauce.....I'm going back to bed...
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • That is very interesting.
    I wonder. . .
Does the color of a cleaned penny come out the same as a shiny uncleaned penny?
Or is the color a little off or way off?

I might have to try that on that Flying Eagle cent of mine with the black splotches.

The professional bathtub cleaner my mom has main ingredient is phosphoric acid, the same as coke. Phosphoric acid is strong stuff.

    just to clairify: snopes
  • I really like how every year or two someone "discovers" vinegar and salt as a copper cleaner. People have been using that as a copper cleaner for cooking utensils for a few hundred years now at least.
  • But the question still stands, does it discolour the coin or does it actually look good afterwards? I have a TON of test subjects that will happen tonight. I will post and then we will let the coins sit and photo them each week to see .... ie ... dark area, sunlit area, next to the catbox and bleach.......

I will do 10 damaged wheats and let everyone know. dates will be 2 of each decade... ie 1919, 1920's,1930's,1940's,1950's.....

  • In my dining experience I've found that Del Taco hot sauce works much better than Taco Bell hot sauce. And you get better food from Del Taco.

Let's face it, our Taco Bell isn't our Grandparent's Taco Bell.

I'm also proud to say that I haven't had Taco Bell in over 3 years! and my stomach thanks me image

Taco sauce, tomatos, coke, Big Mac sauce............you guys are a bunch of amateurs. The professionals use the good stuff, dry aged USDA prime filet mignons and a terragon bernaise sauce to clean their coins.

As a side note, Clams Casino and a 48 oz. Austrailian lobster tail work wonders on proof gold.
  • how will this kind of cleaning effect any grading?

In contrast to your cartoon;droppiing a coin off a tall building will not kill someone. It will hurt though!

I use the salt and vinegar combination to clean a few cents and beacuse of the results I no longer eat Salt and vinegar chipsimage

I dropped a nickel in a glass of coke and let it set for a week because my son came home from school saying coke could dissolve money. Nothing happened. Also, a piece of banana on the copper plating on a sauce pan will "brighten" the copper so I think it might be the citric acid in the fruit that actually affects the copper in pennies. Taco Sauce is made with tomatoes.... so there you go. image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
