A hypothetical: What would you do if you received a numismatic gift that was of no interest to you?

Let's say that a friend, relative or anonymous party gives you a numismatic gift (coin, book, medal, whatever) and you have no interest (sentimental or otherwise) in it.....

Would you sell it and use the proceeds for something that you wanted?
Would you, because you might not feel right about selling it, instead, give it to someone who would appreciate it?
Would you try to trade it for something you wanted?
Would you keep it?
Would you tell the donor what you did with it?
Does it make a difference who gave it to you?

I'm confident that one or more forum members have been in this situation before. imageTo those who are brave enough to answer, please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences (hypothetically or otherwise) with the forum.

PS - In case anyone is turning beet red image and has a guilty conscience, this thread is NOT aimed at anyone in particular - I promise.

I will relate a pratical on above.....dealers give items to yn....sometimes the yn is back on the bourse selling the item ....ticking off the dealer who donated it....however many times it is only because the yn wants to use the money to buy something closer to what they are collecting.......I say live and let live....great post......image

Unless the thing has sentimental value to the person who gave it to me, I'd sell it or give it away, same as if I found it on the street. It's the thought that counts, remember?

Hypothetically speaking if I had won that giveaway that Mark did a couple of weeks ago --

I would have given the coin to a YN during my annual 4th of July YN Giveaway and probably made it a bonus prize for anyone who had entered.

Keep it for a while just in case they ask about it. Then get rid of it.

  • It is very hypothetical since nobody ever gives me anything image

But I did get free premiums from NGC and PCGS for joining - both of which I sold on eBay.

The NGC 5-coin SHQ holder from NGC fetched $27, while the PCGS MS68 SAE only sold for $8. (This year it's a PCGS MS69 SAE)

You know, I had this happen to me. I gave a friend/dealer/board member a numismatic present. It was a present that was near and dear to me, but I guess the person didn't want/like it or just didn't want to be associated with me. He very was very nice about it and handed it back to me, as I was turning around to leave I heard him mumble something about sticking it somewhere!image It hurt me very much, since I respect this person very much!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I have never received a numismatic type gift. I have hinted at this to my family but I know they do not feel comfortable in making such a purchase. I am grateful to those who put thought into their gift giving. The least you can do is keep the item and maybe you will learn to like it. No one should ever know that you do not like or appreciate the gift. If someone thought enough of me to share with me in that way it would not matter what the gift was I would keep it and greatly appreciate them and the gift. I would never sell or give it away. Thanks for your thoughtful post I will keep it too.

If it did not have a lot of sentimental value based on who gave it to me, I'd probably give it to someone as a "starter coin" to get them interested in coin collecting...

The same as I would do if someone gave me a shirt I did not like or did not fit. Exchange (or trade/sell it, in the case of the coin) and get something I do want.

I have already sold and given away quite a few coins given to me by my father and grandmother. In the case of my grandmother (who is not alive), if I would have asked her for permission to sell her coins, she would have been absolutely 100% in favor of me selling her coins to acquire coins that I would prefer to own.
  • I'd keep it. Someday you might want to start collecting whatever was given to you, then you'll be kicking yourself for not hanging on to what you had.

I would sell it or give it away. Same as do with non-numismatic gifts that are of no interest to me.

When I recently sold some property, my realtor - who knows I collect coins - gave me what I'd grade a nice shiny white AU silver dollar - actually, 3 of them. Common dates, nothing special numismatically speaking. If they were worth more, I'd probably throw them up on ebay for $.99 and see what I get ......but its hardly worthwhile do so....so I will just stick them away and be surprised someday when i re-discover them again!.........actually, I probably ALREADY have a few hidden away from the last piece of property I sold <grin>.

  • I would definetly keep any gift coin that someone was thoughtful enough to give me.

of course if debt is looming, then I'll sell, sell it all!
  • My step-dad recently visted me, he drives a truck cross country, so he stops at many differant truck stops, he knows I am into coins in a major way, so he finds a travel shop that has coins.... Needless to say he bought me a set of coins that was in this nice blue and sparkly case ( one of those .20 cent ones that looks like it actually would do better for some time of makeup stuff), from .50 to .01 cent ... All of them from 1935, anyways, to the point, he paid 35.00 for the set, and not a single one of these coins would go past g-4
The quarter is more like an AG ... Well, I know that I couldn't give this stuff away to a collector, so , I figure what the hey, I'll just hold on to it untill it reaches the value of 35.00 ...Maybe in like 70 years or so image . But, I just had to tell him that if he ever feels like buying me a coin, then I'll go with him to purchase it.

From forum members the coin or item is kept. Item was stated because through the years a really cool coat button with the likeness of Miss Liberty as seen on a Merc Dime was sent to me from a well known pattern coin collector here. Also a set of Salt and Pepper shakers was received from another member.

Just today a Cool Picture with Merc Dimes and Stamps titled "The Pioneers" was received. This with the other items mention will be kept with fond memories of the members who sent them. Great acquaintances can be made on these forums.

Only once has a coin been sent on its way. Not because it was not liked but because a YN got the shaft here. He deserved a nice coin and he got it.

If something comes from a person other than a forum member its fair game if I do not like the coin.

    Take Care.

or give it to a new collector of any age

  • I donate these items to my local club for our YN drawings and prizes for the best YN presentation of the month. It sparks interest and your premise was that the item didn't interest me.

If it interested me, I'd keep it.
