I bought this set "unopened" (which I believe is true) on eBay.
This 50c is still in the cello and came complete with a giant finger print

"is"? the mint "is" fingerprinting coins... or WAS, like 39 years ago?

How did you decide that it was a truly unopened set?

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Coins get dumped into the hopper of the counting machine at Brinks and from time to time the operator reaches in and stirs them around to make sure they don't get jammed up. You think the Brinks operator wears gloves for this?
By the way the same thing happens at the mint as well when an inspector reaches in and grabs a handful for inspection. These are just coins for circulation, he's not going to take any special care to keep from getting fingerprints on them.
