Since we're all bored (reimaging results)

Now that I'm in America and can buy Reveal light bulbs, I did. I had to test them. So, since today was pretty boring (not that this is exactly a bustling town on other days), I killed some time taking pics of some of the nicer coins I have with me. I don't have Photoshop on this computer so I couldn't do all the fancy strecthing and cropping tricks, but the Reveal bulbs made the pics come out well enough. I like em image

This one I bought before leaving Germany, just because I had to have a coin with a bishop on it.. not the best condition, but neat design I think.

Portuguese Guinea, 2$50. This thing is a glowing mix of steely blues with some spots of orange, quite odd.

Trying the lights on some copper/bronzes:
Spain 1 cent, 1906. The first set is unmolested, the second is the same coin but I applied auto-leveling on the colors. I can't make up my mind which looks better.

Palestine, 1 mil 1944. This one has a light purple tone.

And a British India, 2 anna from my 1914 collection. I think this is near UNC, just with a bad die.. I can't tell, what do you think?

These are just the ones I've cropped and resized so far. More to come! image

For the Spanish copper I prefer the first image.
I usually decide which image is "better" by holding the coin up and whichever more accurately represents the coin is the one to use.

The Indian coin does look uncirculated but its too tough to tell from the image why it looks like that to venture a guess as to the cause.

Here's a couple of my own coins:

I really like those marks! image

On the Spanish coin, I think I agree. But this one is tricky. Most copper whose pics I've tweaked looks more true in the original. But this one looks true both ways. In standard light the first would be right, but in direct light the second pic is exactly what it looks like.

Usually the auto-levels over do the contrast, but can give better details. Here's an Austrian 2kr, 1914, that I picked up to 50 €-cent at the flea market: original .. auto levels (links due to size).

The Indian coin has nice, but kind of muted luster and only negligible wear. So I think it is a die fault. I dunno, I'll keep it image
  • These are all beautiful spoon, the Palestinian is probably my favourite of the lot. You both have excellent taste. image

Great pix, Spoon!!! I really like that Portugese copper.

Jammin, I dig the luster and look of that 1810 1/6 Thaler.

Since a few of you liked the Guine coin, here's a 5 escudo from Timor. This is a copper-nickel coin! I've seen quite a few Portuguese colonial coins like this.. I don't know what exactly it is in their mixing the metals that does this, but it is pretty neat sometimes. image

And the eBay version of the same image

  • Cool coins. I need bigger lightbulbs as the dinky things I have just aren't cutting it, imaging the medal I got from Sonntag (sig) was a challenge.

Lots to reimage when I get home.

What! I hope you're not waiting to go back home before reimaging!

But, yeah, I know what you mean over there.. dinky bulbs and track lighting everywhere, ugh, I hate that crap. So, aside from that, how're things going in KA? I saw on your travel page that you made it to Strasbourg. That's a cool town. Their cathedral has to be one of my favorites. If you like architectural photography there are plenty of subjects over there!

btw, if I haven't said it before, that is an awsome picture you took of the medal. Sonntag always had a great selection of coins, but they were too often out of my budget.. made me want to cry. image
  • KA is kind of boring. Not much to do here and the male-female ratio is something to be desired. The Krokokeller has a nice selection but I'm not really one for the bump and grind... but in a drought one must do what one must do.
I had a great time at Sonntag when I was there last, they gave me a great catalogue for free and knocked 5 Oyro off the price.

I'll have to go back to Strasbourg again, Interpol is playing there in November so that's a must.

Yeah, Karlsruhe is a quiet city. That can be nice, but maddening too image The way I always met women was walking into places where I don't belong and start talking image That or cafes or the uni. Germans seem to be big on the house parties. You have to find the right cliques to get invited to the big ones and that's where the young people are.. at least in Stuttgart. Also, if you ever head back to Stuttgart for a weekend, Barcode, M1 and Romy S (M1's been going downhill tho) are some of the better clubs in the downtown walking area, all techno of course. Rohre was really the only place for rock made in the last decade and it's not always that great. But if you do concerts there are some huge ones around there. Southside is a good festival down towards the Bodensee (though I never damn made it! 2003 had an awesome lineup). Didn't find much for KA online.. there's this. Hmmm.. Well, have fun however you find it!! imageimage
