You know what's really pathetic? It's sitting in an NGC holder. Is anyone going to dispute that NGC totally ignores luster now?

This is a case of the word "original" being overused and sometimes overrated. I think most people would prefer originality provided they liked the look of the coin, whether that's mostly white or with a lot of color. But these days it seems there's enough emphasis placed on that adjective that even coins that look like junk (and yes, are candidates for dipping because the coin is so unattractive) are being called "original." I suppose it may well be original. Doesn't mean it's terribly desirable. Still, at the current bid, I'd think someone would crack it out and dip it. If the coin is technically solid enough to get 65, it could probably still hit 64 even with slightly impaired luster, and even if one prefers "original" coins, it would probably still look etter to most of us than this one does.

I thought about that, but it's not noon here yet. Then again, it *is* after noon in Ireland... imageimage

Yep. Originality doesn't mean much if the "original surfaces" have the eye appeal of dog poo.

This coin is, or should be, Exhibit A for the "defense" if dipping coins is put on trial. Not wanting to start that debate in yet another thread, let me just say that while most coins should definitely be left alone (IMO), this coin is, to me, a counterexample to the claim that NO coin should ever have its originality "messed with."
  • Looks like it was poorly dipped, then it corroded inside the holder later after it was graded.
I seriously doubt it would be graded now at all.
it's a body bag coin for sure.
