  • I can't say for certain that it's genuine, but the wear and the color seem consistent with the rest of the devices that are visible. That should be a good sign.

  • What mint is it suppose to be from?

  • The way that mintmark looks I wouldn't be one bit suprised if it were a counterfeit, IMO.

    S. And would need to see it at more of an angle. But looks like it belongs on the coin.

It does look like the rest of the coin. Maybe the obverse diagnostics of an 1893-S would confirm authenticity.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Bill: I would be very cautious and a bit suspicious of that "S" mint mark on the supposed 1893-S.

I think that there are telltale signs of re-tooling (darkened areas around the "S") and my personal opinion is that the mintmark may have been added to an 1893-P Morgan.

Is this a raw coin that you already own, or is it a potential purchase? If the latter, I'd stay away. If the former, send it in for certification.

  • Is there a very small raised diagonal line in the 'T' of Liberty? If so then there is an extremely good chance that this coin is genuine. Since there was only one known die pair for this issue, it is a very good telltale sign. Personally, I don't like the look of this coin. I would be very leary about purchasing it.

Bill: I'm sure that you've seen the graffiti (scratches) on both of the the eagle's wings.

There should be a couple of die chips similar to rabbit ears in the left base of the R in LIBERTY. Can you get a very close photo of it?
  • jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,674 ✭✭✭✭✭
Take a close-up shot of R in liberty and also the date.

Hopefull with that we can be sure.

Looks like there is something in the base of the R, and a faint mark in the T. Very likely real. The left "ear" in the base of the R should be larger than the right.

The date looks right but I cannot see the line on the "T" in LIBERTY, looks to be a fake to me.

The date alignment looks okay, the die line in T, I cant quite see. It actually might be a good one?

  • heres a good pic of the "T" & "R" diagnostics

    image
  • image

Don't ask me how the hell I can see them, but I DO see the line in the T and the break in the base of the R from this pic. Of course, I'm on a laptop and I can get up real close to the screen and the image is MUCH clearer on an LCD. I have a trick I can try on the pic to see for sure. BRB. image

Ok, I'm back and here's what I got. Look inside my red circles. The one on the T is hard to see. There is a distinct low spot splitting the leg on the R into two. The line on the T is also somewhat visible. I think it's genuine.

  • It does seem to have the looks of being geniuine.
But how about those scratches on the left wing?
I don't think PCGS would slab it with those scratches.

Well, if the diagnostics in Liberty are there, then it's probably real. It's hard to fake those, which is the exact reasons those are the diagnostics. It's hard to tell if the 1 in 1893 lines up with the dentical correctly. ...not much dentical left. I'm sure PCGS would bag it for damage reguardless of whether it were real or not. That coin should probably go to ANACS for net grading.
